MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Guilt Trip' - Laguna Niguel - Patch

At first glance, this feature film seems awfully peculiar, simply in part to the duo who star in it. Funny man, Seth Rogen and Hollywood icon Barbra Streisand, seem to be a weird choice for a film about a mother and son who travel across the country. This being said, the two work surprisingly well together.

Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is a scientist and an inventor with a great new cleaning product that he has made, that is Eco friendly and sure to turn the cleaning industry upside down for the better. He is the only child of his ever talkative and life of the party mother (Barbra Streisand) and together they journey across the country to try and sell his product to large household named companies.?

The duo's on screen dynamic is somewhat refreshing to see. The unexpectedness?of how well the two gel is actually what makes this film good. Joyce Brewster, Andy's mother is pushy, loud and doesn't seem to get sarcasm or condescension. Andy is straight to the point, monotone and very sarcastic. Together they go back and forth in some hilarious scenes that leave you stunned because of just how much you have laughed at the two.

The film follows the pair across many states, as Andy gets rejected from company to company. His charisma simply isn't there when pitching his idea. He is more scientist than salesman. With the help of his mother he learns to let go, and the two become closer. For Joyce, the trip is one of self discovery, closure and plenty of fun.?

The film caught me by surprise, as I sat in the theater, fully ready to come out and put pen to paper, filled with words like boring, predictable and overrated. Contrary to my previous notions, this film is a great family themed movie (with small instances of profanity) with a great moral behind it and some laughs along the way.

Streisand is as good as she has ever been, and Rogen plays his usual dry humored self to a "T". Worth a watch in my opinion.

I give it 3.5 patches out of 5 !
