With the help of the Army Sustainment Command, about 100 computers were donated to Riverdale Community Unit School District 100 from Rock Island Arsenal, March 13.
The district is located in northwest Illinois near the Quad Cities. Riverdale schools have about 1,140 students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.
In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed an executive order mandating that the federal government donate excess and outdated computers to schools and to non-profit organizations.
The Department of Defense Computers for Learning Program, or CLP, focuses on four major developments in American education: making modern computer technology an integral part of every classroom; providing teachers with the professional development they need to use new technologies effectively; connecting classrooms to the National Information Infrastructure; and encouraging the creation of excellent educational software.
RIA donated desktop computers, laptops and monitors that students will use in their computer labs and libraries.
These units will primarily be used in the middle school and high school.
Judy Keplinger, technology coordinator for the district, picked up the computers which will replace computers that are more than 10 years old.
"This is great for us. With state budget reductions and no ability to buy new computers this helps us out a lot," Keplinger said. "It's close and they are free. This is the fifth trip that I made to the Arsenal over the past two years."
Therese Roof and Chad Baetke, employees of the RIA Directorate of Logistics, are in charge of making sure that each computer is working properly and that hard drives have been wiped [of data] before they are sent to area schools.
Once computers are inspected, they are put in queue to be distributed to schools.
"I think this is great. The computers are 760 and 755 Dell models ... a nice upgrade for the schools at no cost," said Sherrill Benson, property disposal specialist, Defense Logistics Agency.
Beneficiaries from 2012 were: Jordan Catholic School, Rock Island, Ill.; Riverview Middle School, Barron, Wis.; Carlton High School, Carlton, Minn.; Seton Catholic Elementary School and Middle School, Moline, Ill.
"We are currently working with Morrison High School, in Morrison, Ill.," said Benson.
