Oregon State coach Mike Riley gets his record - and more applause

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The applause for Oregon State coach Mike Riley started about five years ago, and it has been going ever since.

That's when former OSU linebacker Joey LaRocque thought it would be funny to clap for the head coach in a team meeting. In every meeting since, players have given Riley a round of applause.

"We're just proud of what he does, and we love him,'' said receiver Markus Wheaton. "It's been like this ever since I've been here.''

On Saturday night at Arizona Stadium, the cheers grew louder. The Beavers' wild 38-35 win over the Wildcats not only moved them to 3-0 but it also was Riley's 75th as OSU coach, breaking Lon Stiner's school record that stood for 64 years.

"The main thing is having been some place for a while,'' Riley said after the game. "That's the biggest thing to me, because when I came back, that's what I set my mind to do because I gave that up when I left. I'm just thankful I had this kind of time to get a chance at a record like this.''

Of all those 75 wins, this was one of the craziest. The Beavers built a 10-point halftime lead only to give it away as Arizona scored 21 points in the third quarter ? the only third-quarter points OSU has given up this season.

It wasn't until the final minute, after Sean Mannion hit Connor Hamlett with a 9-yard touchdown pass and Rashaad Reynolds made a game-saving interception, that Riley could exhale.

It is fitting that the record would come this way. After Riley's rock-bottom year of 2011, when the Beavers went 3-9, they have come out in 2012 and matched that total in three tries ? the last two coming on the road.

Mannion was 29 of 45 for 433 yards and no interceptions. It was the fifth-highest passing total in OSU history and worthy of a standing ovation in itself.

On Saturday night, the OSU contingent included some 60 family members and friends of Wheaton, the Arizona native who caught 10 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

The orange-wearing throng stood and cheered well after the game ended, and the applause finally stopped as the buses pulled away.

But for Riley, it has not. Not even in 2011. It remained consistent, a reflection of the 12-year Riley era that began in 1997, with a four-year break (1999-2002) while he coached in the NFL.

"His consistency has really helped,'' offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said. "We've stayed pretty even-keeled through the good and the bad.''

Saturday night's win also was the 48th league victory for Riley, tying him with California coach Jeff Tedford for 17th place all-time. He trails only Tedford (80) in overall wins by a current Pac-12 coach.

Riley is also the only OSU coach to have won more than one bowl game (he has won five) and the first to lead the Beavers to more than one winning season in conference (also five) since 1969.

When he began his OSU coaching career in 1997, the Beavers were mired in a 28-year streak of losing seasons. If 75 seems a modest number for an all-time victory leader, it's because Riley's native Corvallis has not been a hotbed of college football success through the years.

"This is a tough job, and it's a place we have to go the extra mile to win,'' Langsdorf said.

And that's part of the appreciation Riley receives in every single team meeting.

"I've always laughed at that,'' Langsdorf said. "It's neat. It's a pretty unique thing. It's a sign of respect for him.''

According to the players, the applause is well-deserved ? even before the record.

"He's the dad of us,'' tackle Colin Kelly said. "He deserves our respect.''

And, Riley says, his staff deserves the record, too.

"It's not my record,'' Riley said. "(Defensive coordinator) Mark Banker's been with me every game here. (Special teams coach) Bruce Read has been here for most of them, Danny Langsdorf, we have a great group of guys.

"That's why I do this thing. I love the camaraderie of the staff. We all have one vision: We try to build these kids up and coach them like crazy, and we've been able to do that at Oregon State, and we're proud of that.''

Google Field Trip serves as a tour guide on your mobile phone

23 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

Health and Fitness: The 80/20 Rule | South Lake Tahoe ...

Peace of Mind Float Spa L.L.C. is Lake Tahoe's premiere Sensory Deprivation (Float Tank) destination. We provide 2 float tanks as well as a Far Infared Sauna and an Aroma Therapy Oxygen Bar to enhance your complete flotation experience. Operated by Karin and Darin Nobriga, long time Tahoe locals. We provide the most relaxing mind and body experience in the Tahoe basin.

We're located at 290 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline, Nevada next to the Goal Post and a quarter mile from the Stateline casinos. We offer local and casino employee discounts and encourage those who haven't floated, to try the most relaxing experience of their lives.
What is Floating?
Floating is a therapeutic treatment that isolates the user from environmental stimulus, greatly reducing stress, and easing the body into a state of equilibrium. Floating is also known as flotation therapy, floating therapy, float therapy, restricted environmental stimulation therapy (or REST), and Epsom salt hydrotherapy. The flotation tank is referred to as an isolation tank, sensory deprivation chamber, float tank, floating tank, and rest tank.

The flotation tank itself is a sensory deprivation pod with 10 inch deep water warmed to 93.5 degrees and enriched with 800 pounds of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). The tank has an advanced filtration/purification system that operates according to regulations from the State of Nevada.

The space inside is approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide. Although some may be wary of feeling claustrophobic the first time they float, the tank door opens freely and you are in complete control. You can come and go as you wish. You can also float with the door open. For those who would like audio stimulation, relaxing music is available.
The experience of floating is unique. Inside the tank you?ll float effortlessly on the surface of 93.5 degree water. Floaters feel a sense of weightlessness. That weightlessness, the temperature of the water, and the dark, quiet space of the tank allow the brain to ease into a theta* brain wave state. This usually happens in the second half hour of a one hour float session. First time floaters should not expect instant results. Generally it takes more than one float to completely ?let go? and fully experience flotation.

Self Publishing Versus Conventional Publishing? 5 Big Advantages ...

Why Are You Atheists So Angry?Ever since I self-published the ebook of ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless? ? and ever since I got the print edition published by a conventional small-press publisher, Pitchstone ? other writers have been asking me for advice about self-publishing, conventional publishing, and which they should pursue.

I have become a serious convert to self-publishing, and am a big booster of it. But I also recognize that the success of ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry?? is something of an outlier in the self-publishing world, and that this avenue isn?t for everyone. So I want to do a bit of a public service announcement for other writers, and lay out what I see as the major advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing versus conventional publishing.

Advantages to self-publishing:

1) You get to keep most of your money. This is not a trivial matter. Especially if you have serious ambitions of being a full-time or even part-time professional writer.

2) You get to be in control. You control publicity. You control design. You get to write your product description. An editor won?t make you change that beautiful turn of phrase just because it?s not Chicago Manual of Style. You decide cover art (and this is NOT trivial: I?ve seen authors weep tears of blood and threaten to quit writing altogether because a boring or butt-ugly cover got forced on them.) If you are a giant control queen like me, this is a big freaking deal.

And you?re not at the mercy of the whims and weathers of your publisher. In conventional publishing, if your favorite editor who loves your work and totally gets your market suddenly gets fired, or moves on to greener pastures? If there?s a buyout or a change in ownership, and the new ant overlords hate your book and decide to bury it? If some dolt in the marketing department decides that your biting analysis of the history of religious apologetics can be sold to the burgeoning tween market if they just slap a vampire on the cover? If your editor goes mad and sets fire to their office because you accidentally re-wrote the Necronomicon and reading your book opened a portal in their brain to the demon underworld? (I hate it when that happens!) You?re pretty much hosed. Depending on your contract, there?s either little you can do, or nothing you can do. When you?re publishing yourself, you can publish your demonic ravings on your own timetable, and nobody can stop you. NOBODY! BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA! The world is DOOMED!

3) It is fast, fast, fast. There is no way I could have gotten ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry?? out in time for the Reason Rally if it had been published conventionally. A small press will be more nimble than a big house?. but they?ll still be significantly slower getting your book out than you will yourself. If for no other reason, a conventional publisher actually has to physically print a big batch of physical books. (I know, right? Are we living in the Dark Ages or something?) And that takes time that ebook publishing and print-on-demand don?t. If you have an idea that?s timely, if there?s a wave you want to ride, self-publishing means you can get your book out like lightning. Once it?s written, you format it or pay someone to format it; you go to Kindle/ Nook/ Smashwords/ CreateSpace/ Lulu/ whatever; you hit the ?Publish? button. Done.

4) Did I mention that you get to keep most of your money?

5) The weird little truth that conventional publishers are beginning to freak out about: There really isn?t a whole lot that conventional publishers can do for you that you can?t do for yourself. There are some things ? I?ll get to those in a sec ? and depending on your situation, they may not be trivial.

But here?s the thing. A conventional publisher can give you a promotion budget? but they probably won?t. Or they won?t give you much of one. They probably won?t even consider publishing your book if you can?t do the lion?s share of publicity yourself. A conventional publisher can get your book into bookstores and mainstream book distribution channels? but bookstore sales are an ever-decreasing percentage of the book market. Online sales and ebook sales are kicking bookstores? asses. That sucks giant donkey dicks: I love bookstores, I want my book in bookstores, any bookstores who want to carry ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry?? should contact either Pitchstone (the publisher) or Last Gasp (the current distributor). But it?s a reality that writers need to accept.

Honestly? The publishing world kind of screwed itself. The big houses especially. They kept cutting back and cutting back and cutting back on what they give to authors, and expecting authors to do more and more and more of the heavy lifting themselves. And then self-publishing books started to become cost-effective, and blogging/ citizen journalism/ other electronic self-publishing forms started getting credibility, and authors started saying, ?So I?m working with you? why, again?? If you?re a writer, that?s a question you should seriously be asking.

And, of course, all this is assuming that you can, in fact, get a contract with a conventional book publisher? which has always been hard, and is getting harder all the time.

So if publishers can?t do that much for you that you can?t do for yourself? why not just do it yourself, and keep most of your money?

Advantages to conventional publishing:

1) With self-publishing, you have to pay for everything yourself: formatting, cover art, review copies, ISBNs, promo cards, etc. You may be able to get help with some of this, free or cheap: from friends, from fans, from work-trade agreements. But not all of it. If you don?t have the cash/ resources to absorb these costs upfront and take the risk that it may not pan out, it may well be worth it to you to have a conventional publisher absorb those costs instead.

2) With self-publishing, you have to do everything yourself. This is the flip side of ?you get to be in control.? You have to do publicity, promotion, dealing with formatters, acquiring ISBNs ? everything ? all by yourself, or with the help of friends and colleagues. That doesn?t just take money? it takes time. And it takes motivation. If you?re considering self-publishing, ask yourself: ?Do I really have the time and energy to deal with all that boring business bullshit?? If your answer is a horrified, nauseated shudder, conventional publishing might be right for you.

3) Having an editor is often a good thing. If you self-publish, your non-existent editor won?t make you change that beautiful turn of phrase just because it?s not Chicago Manual of Style? but they also won?t catch that horrendously stupid mistake you made. If you self-publish, it?s an excellent idea to hire a copy editor ? but then you have to add that to your upfront costs. (Or do what I did, and marry one.)

4) Being a self-publisher means being a publisher. And that means understanding the publishing business. I had a big leg up when I self-published ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry??: I?d been working in the publishing industry in one capacity or another (for book publishers, book distributors, retail mail-order companies working with book publishers and distributors, magazine publishers, newspaper publishers) for decades. I knew the business ? the small, quirky, indie end of the business, anyway ? very well indeed, and I had a working familiarity with the bigger side of the business as well. If you?re self-publishing and you don?t have that knowledge, you?re going to have to acquire it, or learn it on the fly.

On the other hand? some publishers don?t seem to understand the publishing world very well, either. The big ones especially. The degree to which big book publishers have utterly failed to adapt to the electronic world astonishes me. Look at simple things like, ?Your cover art has to look good on a computer screen in thumbnail size,? for fuck?s sake. How hard is that to get right?

5) There is still a certain cred that conventional publishing confers on a writer. And there is still a certain stigma on self-publishing, a whiff of the ?vanity press? notion. This is diminishing significantly, and it?s diminishing more and more all the time, but it?s still there. The fact that a professional in the industry decided your work was publishable and sellable does give you a certain cachet. And if you?ve been picked up by one publisher, it increases your chances of being picked up by another.

On the other hand? if you self-publish and your book does well, that increases your chances with publishers, too. It shows that you have a platform, that you?re motivated and engaged in promoting your work, and that your work will sell. And the cred gap between conventional publishing and self-publishing is closing all the time. Also, you may decide that you don?t really care about that cred stuff, if it means you get to control your business and keep more of your money.

Bottom line:

If you?re a highly self-motivated, reasonably well-organized control freak, with the time and resources to put into the project and a good platform for publicizing your book (a blog, a videoblog, a podcast, connections with other bloggers and videobloggers and podcasters, lots of followers on Facebook and Twitter and whatnot), self-publishing is probably a good choice. And if conventional publishers won?t publish your book, self-publishing is an excellent choice. Definitely the way to go.

But if a conventional publisher will publish your book ? and if it?s worth making less money and giving up control to have someone else absorb the upfront costs and hassles and boring business end of publishing, and if you?re not a giant control freak like me ? then conventional publishing is probably worth it.

Note: ?Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless? is currently available in ebook form at Kindle, Nook, and multiple formats on Smashwords, including iBooks, Sony Reader, Kobo, Kindle (.mobi), Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, any other reader that takes the Epub format, Palm Doc (PDB), PDF, RTF, Online Reading via HTML, and Plain Text for either downloading or viewing. All ebook editions and formats cost just $7.99.

You can get the print edition through Last Gasp ? wholesale and retail mail-order ? through the Richard Dawkins Foundation bookstore, and at the American Atheists online bookstore. (The AA store website is slightly wonky, but if you go there and select ?New Products? in the left sidebar [NOT "Newest Items"], it?s right there at the top of the section.) It can also be ordered directly from the publisher, Pitchstone Publishing. (You can also pre-order the print edition through Amazon ? but Amazon and most other retailers won?t have the book until the fall.) The print edition is $14.95.

And the audiobook version is available at Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. And yes, I did the recording for it!

from your own site.

UK regulator outlines LIBOR overhaul

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's financial regulator on Friday laid out a 10-point plan to overhaul the handling of a key global interest rate that has been the subject of a scandal involving major banks across multiple countries.

Barclays bank agreed in June to pay a $453 million fine to U.S. and British agencies after admitting it had submitted false information for the London Interbank Offered Rate, or LIBOR, which is used to price trillions of dollars in financial contracts, including mortgages. Other firms are being probed in the scandal, which has undermined public trust in banks and damaged the reputations of British financial regulators.

The new plan proposes that bankers convicted of manipulating the rate face criminal penalties and that a new agency take over management of LIBOR. It also calls for tougher controls on banks involved in the rate's calculation.

"Although the current system is broken, it is not beyond repair," said Martin Wheatley, managing director of the Financial Services Authority, the main regulator, as he announced recommendations from the review of LIBOR ordered by the British government.

The FSA said Friday that the rate-fixing scandal was an industry-wide problem which tore "the very fabric that our financial system is built on".

The British Bankers' Association, a trade group, sets the LIBOR every morning after about a dozen international banks submit estimates of what it costs them to borrow. Regulators in the U.S., Britain, Switzerland and other countries allege some banks, including Barclays, purposefully submitted fake numbers to have the LIBOR set at a rate that better suited them.

Wheatley recommended that the handling of LIBOR be stripped from the British Bankers' Association, which "clearly failed" in administering the rate

He accused the BBA of being careless in policing LIBOR, putting too much trust in a system lacking "the right level of checks and balances." Wheatley said he is setting up an independent panel to lead the appointment process for a new group to run Libor, inviting other groups to apply to take over the role and that he wants the new managing body to draw up a code of conduct and carry out regular audits.

The BBA said the review was an "essential step" toward reforming Libor and signaled it would accept Wheatley's recommendation to hand oversight to a new administrator.

Wheatley also proposed that banks submitting rates be subject to formal approval. More banks should be encouraged to submit rates to make the LIBOR benchmark more representative, while the publication of individual submissions should be held back for three months to help prevent manipulation, he said.

He proposed that the FSA continue to be the main regulator.

Britain's Treasury expressed support for the "comprehensive and practical recommendations" laid out in the review, while Bank of England governor Mervyn King called for a swift implementation of the proposals.

So far, Barclays is the only bank which has been identified as submitting false reports of the rates it expected to pay to borrow from other banks, although several other banks ? including Citigroup Inc., Royal Bank of Scotland and JPMorgan Chase & Co. ? are known to be under investigation.

Ex-NY Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies - KWQC-TV6 ...

By DAVID B. CARUSO and KAREN MATTHEWS
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Few moments in American journalism loom larger than the one that came in 1971, when New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger had to decide whether to defy a president, and risk a potential criminal charge, by publishing a classified Defense Department history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

His choice, to publish the Pentagon Papers and then fight the Nixon administration's subsequent attempt to muzzle the story, cemented Sulzberger's place as a First Amendment giant - a role being celebrated after he died Saturday at age 86.

The former publisher, who led the Times to new levels of influence and profit while standing up for press freedom, died at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness, his family announced.

During his three-decade tenure, Sulzberger's newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes while he went about transforming the family business from perpetually shaky to the muscular media behemoth it was when he retired.

Weekday circulation climbed from 714,000 when Sulzberger became publisher in 1963 to 1.1 million when he stepped down as publisher in 1992. Over the same period, the annual revenues of the Times' corporate parent rose from $100 million to $1.7 billion.

Yet it was Sulzberger's positions on editorial independence that made him a hero of the profession, like when he rejected his own lawyers' warnings that even reading the Pentagon Papers, let alone publishing them, constituted a crime.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch" and served with the Marine Corps, privately worried that he had doomed the newspaper but gave interviews saying the Times wouldn't allow the U.S. government to cover up its mistakes under the guise of national security.

"That is a wonderful way, if you've got egg on your face, to prevent anybody from knowing it: Stamp it SECRET and put it away," he said.

"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press," his son, and current Times publisher, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., said in a statement.

Sulzberger was the only grandson of Adolph S. Ochs (pronounced ox), the son of Bavarian immigrants who took over the Times in 1896 and built it into the nation's most influential newspaper.

The family retains control to this day, holding a special class of shares that give them more powerful voting rights than other stockholders.

Power was thrust on Sulzberger at the age of 37 after the sudden death of his brother-in-law in 1963. He had been in the Times executive suite for eight years in a role he later described as "vice president in charge of nothing."

But Sulzberger directed the Times' evolution from an encyclopedic paper of record to a more reader-friendly product that reached into the suburbs and across the nation.

Under his watch, the Times started a national edition, bought its first color presses, and introduced - to the chagrin of some hard-news purists - popular and lucrative sections covering topics such as food and entertainment.

"You forget the unbelievable outrage that greeted those sections. But in retrospect it was the right decision both editorially and economically," said Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In 1992, Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's job to his son but remained chairman of The New York Times Co. Sulzberger retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997. His son then was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

Reacting to news of Sulzberger's death Saturday, former Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld said that his business success was matched by integrity in the newsroom.

"As an editor, you knew that if you went to the publisher and sought his support on an issue that you deemed to be of high importance, you could pretty much count on getting it. He knew how to back his people," Lelyveld said.

President Barack Obama said Sulzberger was "a firm believer in the importance of a free and independent press - one that isn't afraid to seek the truth, hold those in power accountable, and tell the stories that need to be told."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he "changed the course of American history with his journalistic decisions."

Significant free-press and free-speech precedents were established during Sulzberger's years as publisher, most notably the Times vs. Sullivan case. It resulted in a landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that shielded the press from libel lawsuits by public officials unless they could prove actual malice.

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt. "The Associated Press benefited from his wisdom, both during his years on the board of directors and his thoughtful engagement in the years that followed."

In 1971, the Times led the First Amendment fight to keep the government from suppressing the Pentagon Papers.

Sulzberger read more than 7,000 pages of the documents and presided over a dramatic internal debate before deciding to publish. Then, he resisted a demand by Attorney General John Mitchell that the paper halt the series after two installments.

A federal judge delayed publication of additional installments, but in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court eventually sided with the Times and The Washington Post, and allowed the series to continue.

"There were those that thought some kind of deal or reconciliation with the government should have been sought," said First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, who represented the Times in the court case. "It was Punch Sulzberger who made the decision to resist the government's effort. In making that decision he set in motion a litigation which not only preserved but protected the First Amendment for generations."

In their book "The Trust," a history of the Ochs-Sulzberger family and its stewardship of the paper, Susan E. Tifft and Alex S. Jones cited Sulzberger's "common sense and unerring instincts."

In an interview in 1990 with New York magazine, Sulzberger was typically candid about the paper's readership.

"We're not New York's hometown newspaper," he said. "We're read on Park Avenue, but we don't do well in Chinatown or the east Bronx. We have to approach journalism differently than, say, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, where you try to blanket the community."

Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926, the only son of Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his wife, Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, Adolph's only child. One of his three sisters was named Judy, and from early on he was known as "Punch," from the puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Sulzberger's grandfather led the paper until his death in 1935, when he was followed by Sulzberger's father, who remained at the helm until he retired in 1961.

Except for a year at The Milwaukee Journal, 1953-54, the younger Sulzberger spent his entire career at the family paper after graduating from Columbia College in 1951. He worked in European bureaus for a time and was back in New York by 1955, but found he had little to do.

At various times, Sulzberger was a director or chairman of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, American Newspaper Publishers Association and American Press Institute. He was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1984.

Sulzberger married Barbara Grant in 1948, and the couple had two children, Arthur Jr. and Karen. After a divorce in 1956, Sulzberger married Carol Fox. The couple had a daughter, Cynthia, and Sulzberger adopted Fox's daughter from a previous marriage, Cathy.

Carol Sulzberger died in 1995. The following year, Sulzberger married Allison Cowles, the widow of William H. Cowles 3rd, who was the president and publisher of The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle of Spokane, Wash. She died in 2010.

Computer classifies paintings like an art critic

30 min.

While art may be in the eye of the beholder, a computer algorithm has been developed that can classify paintings as well as distinguished human art historians.

The task is a breakthrough for the field of artificial intelligence, showing that futuristic computers won?t just be trivia-answering champs such as IBM?s Watson or math nerds such as the Todai Robot, but trusty companions in fashionable art circles as well.

The algorithm computes from each painting 4,027 numbers that reflect the content of the image such as color, texture and shapes and then uses pattern-recognition and statistical methods to analyze similarities and differences between painting styles.

In an experiment, Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University used their algorithm to analyze about 1,000 paintings from 34 well-known artists. The computer provided a network of similarities between painters that agrees with the perception of art historians.

For example, it was able to distinguish between classical realism and modern artistic styles and then identified sub groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements, such as grouping the painters Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo close to each other.

?These results demonstrate that machine vision and pattern recognition algorithms are able to mimic the complex cognitive task of the human perception of visual art,? the researchers conclude in a recent paper on their work published in the Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage.

This skill, they add, ?can be used to measure and quantify visual similarities between paintings, painters and schools of art.??

Family fights blood disorders with music - Lehigh Valley Health Blog

September 28, 2012

Posted by Milton Carrero at 01:44:42 PM on September 28, 2012

Kana Mimaki

Blood disorders have marked Sandra Moran's family in devastating ways.

Her twin daughters were both diagnosed with Leukemia soon after their birth. Moran fought the disease by their daughters' side until their last days. She did the same for her sister, who died of Lymphoma at the age of 39.

The disease seems to have claimed a few battles, but the Morans are still fighting. And this time, they are using music.

Jessica and Christa Moran both loved music. They were constantly in pain and yet they kept their spirits high with songs and good humor.

Jessica died at 21 and Christa just shy of her 25th birthday. But they are remembered by family and friends as the 'Giggle Twins,' because their joy was never far from sight.

To honor them, and to help others suffering from blood disorders, the family has organized a piano duet concert on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 4 pm in the Wesley United Methodist Church, located at 2540 Center Street in Bethlehem. ?All proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of the Lehigh Valley.

Guest Performers include accomplished pianists Daniel L. Kramlich?and Kana Mimaki of Houston, TX., ?who will fuse musical notes from separate pianos. Kramlich, is music professor at?Houston Baptist University whose work has been?commissioned by the Arkansas Symphony. He is also known for his?arrangements for handbells and piano.

Mimaki?is the winner of the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, the International Russian Music Competition, and Catania International Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto Competition. She has?performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Also performing will be guest soloist Ms. Karen Cocca of Allentown.

The program will include both classical and contemporary music as well as some original compositions by Dr. Kramlich, who was born and raised in the?Lehigh Valley. ??

"My mission is to raise as much as we can so that more people can have more hope in the future," Moran explains. ??

How can I make sure I am properly diversified across multiple - CNN

I have many mutual funds and ETFs spread out between my IRA, 401(k), 529 and a brokerage account. How can I compare the holdings of each fund to ensure I'm not overinvesting in one sector? ? Joe K.

One do-it-yourself option is to use an online portfolio analysis tool such as Morningstar's free Instant X-Ray, suggests Jean Keener of Keener Financial Planning in Keller, Tex. With Instant X-Ray (find it by going to?morningstar.com and clicking on the "Tools" tab), plug in the ticker symbols of all your investments, from stocks in your taxable account to the mutual funds in your 401(k). The tool crunches the data and spits out an analysis of your portfolio's asset allocation, along with other bits of information, from key valuation measures to average fees and expenses.

"These tools can help you identify any potential problem areas in your portfolio," says Keener. For instance, you may find that your portfolio is overly concentrated in large-cap stocks, or that you have very little in the way of international exposure.

Many MBA applicants feel that they are purchasing a brand when they choose a business school, but the educational experience itself is crucial to your future, and no one will affect your education more than your professors. Each Wednesday, we profile a standout professor as identified by students. Today, we profile?Aneel Karnani?from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Aneel Karnani (?Corporate Strategy? and ?Strategy for Growth?) is chair of the strategy department at Ross and teaches courses in both the core and elective curriculums. All the students mbaMission interviewed about Karnani lauded his innovative way of teaching, which, one said, keeps you ?at the edge of your seat.? Karnani is known to challenge his students constantly, forcing them to rethink their views and opinions. His areas of interest include corporate competitiveness?particularly in the context of companies that are growing in emerging economies?and the role of the private sector in the fight against poverty. Karnani received a Teaching Excellence Award, voted on by the Ross student body, in 2001, 2007 and 2009.

NFL 2012

Packers Seahawks Football

Officials discuss the final play of the game as Green Bay Packers' Charles Woodson, second from right, and Seattle Seahawks' Earl Thomas, right, leave the field.

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

This, to me, is the iconic photo of last night. More so even than?the side judge signaling touchdown while the back judge waves his hands over his head.?As the video booth checks the replay, the officiating crew gathers for what looks like a heated discussion. An argument, you might even say. The field judge (102) jaws with the line judge (59, number partially visible). The two officials who actually made the call are silent. The head linesman stands away from the huddle. The referee is nowhere to be seen.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about these replacement officials, be they formerly amateur, arena, or lingerie, is how little we know about them. In the old days, refereeing assignments would be announced a few days before the weekend?just another page in the media packet. But now that everybody wants to talk about the refs, and learn their backstories, the NFL has made that information a lot harder to come by.

We're used to checking FootballZebras.com for the crew assignments, but even they have been at a loss. "We are expecting to get the officiating assignments piecemeal," they have warned every week, and even now?their Week 3 list has holes.?(If anyone knows who refereed the Jags-Colts game, please let them know.)

Why does it matter? Accountability. For all their mistakes in the first two weeks, we have no idea if the NFL has been punishing those officials by reassigning them or releasing them. We have no idea if the NFL cares when these guys screw up, or are even paying attention.

And, of course, there?s the fact that outcomes?worth hundreds of millions of dollars?are being overseen by officials with less-than-comforting backgrounds.

Here are the men who called last night?s game:

R 28?
Wayne Elliott
U??
46 Marc Harrod
HL 77
Mike Peek
LJ?
59 Tom Keeling
FJ
102 Richard Simmons
SJ 26 Lance Easley
BJ??
84???
Derrick Rhone-Dunn
Alt?????? 18
Joe Clark

Rhone-Dunn, the back judge who had the best view of the play and initially signaled interception, is the most experienced member of the crew. Formerly a Big 12 official, he?worked the Sugar Bowl back in 2007?and arena games since then. Easley, the side judge who overruled Rhone-Dunn, is a banker from California,?who has officiated high school and junior college games,?both football and basketball. Elliott, the head referee who should have gotten his crew together and asked them what they saw before signaling for a touchdown, is a real estate agent in Texas who has worked high school, college, and indoor football.

This was the same crew for last week's Rams-Redskins game?one that got out of hand,?and caused Mike Shanahan to tell reporters, "Never have I been involved in a game like this."

Will this crew be disciplined? Broken up? Sent to re-education camp to watch film, or docked salary, or let go altogether? We might never know. Because the NFL wants you to put your trust in it?even after?a huge Saints fan was assigned to work a Saints game, and an official who drew paychecks from the Seahawks for three years?worked a Seahawks game. I know what's best for the league, Roger Goodell whispers. Forget those silly questions about the refs, and while you're at it, forget about asking what the actual Bountygate evidence is, or what the league is doing about brain trauma. Trust the NFL.
