D'Angelo covers Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun'

Virgin Records

By Anna Chan

Fans of R&B musician D'Angelo, your long wait for his followup to 2000's platinum-selling "Voodoo" may finally be coming to an end.

He's set to perform a few shows overseas, starting in Stockholm on Jan. 26. And on Monday, a demo of the neo-soul singer covering Soundgarden's hit "Black Hole Sun" off the 1994 album "Superunknown" surfaced on YouTube. (According to Spin, the recording may have been made in 2010.)

But fans of the 1990's hit may not be as excited as D'Angelo fans.

Save for a few lines from the chorus, this interpretation is pretty unrecognizable. Gone is ... pretty much everything wonderful about the?original. In its place is a tune that seems a bit flat and devoid of the emotional punch of the original. (It sounds like pretty elevator music.)?The vocals? Reminiscent of the Chipmunks whispering. True, it's not exactly fair to be judging a tune labeled as a?"demo," but when a cover of a hit drops, it's tough to resist comparing the new to the original masterpiece.

Check out D'Angelo's (unfinished) interpretation:
