Factbox: The life and death of Whitney Houston (omg!)

(Reuters) - Funeral services will be held on Saturday for Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston. The 48-year-old performer, best known for her hit song "I Will Always Love You," died last week at a Beverly Hills hotel.

Here are some facts about her life, career, death and the funeral service:

THE FUNERAL

- Held at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday. As a child, Houston sang in the church's gospel and soul choir with her mother, Cissy Houston.

- Invitation-only memorial service will be televised from 11 a.m. Eastern Time (1600 GMT). Police will lock down the streets near the funeral, which is set to begin at noon (1700 GMT).

- Performers confirmed to take part in the service are Tyler Perry, Kevin Costner, Aretha Franklin, Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick, Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, Rickey Minor, Marvin Winans and Cece Winans.

- Also attending as guests are Elton John, Beyonce, rapper Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby.

HER DEATH

- Houston was found underwater and unconscious by a member of her staff in her Beverly Hills hotel room on the eve of Sunday's Grammy Awards. It was the same day she was scheduled to attend a pre-Grammy gala given by her mentor, record producer Clive Davis. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

- An autopsy has been performed, but a cause of death is pending completion of an official investigation and toxicology tests, which could take weeks to complete.

- The Los Angeles County Coroner has said there were no visible signs of trauma or foul play. Prescription drugs were found in her room, but officials have not specified the type or amount found in her room.

- Beverly Hills Police have said "we are not conducting a homicide investigation."

LIFE AND CAREER

- Houston won six Grammys, 30 Billboard awards and 22 American Music Awards in her career. Her best-known songs include "Saving All my Love for You," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "My Love Is Your Love."

- She released seven studio albums, the most recent in 2009, and is said to have sold more than 170 million records.

- Houston's movies included "The Bodyguard" in 1992 with Kevin Costner, "The Preacher's Wife" with Denzel Washington, and "Waiting to Exhale."

- Houston started out singing in her church gospel choir in New Jersey at age 11 and released her first album in 1985 after being discovered by record producer Clive Davis.

- Houston married singer Bobby Brown in 1992. Their turbulent marriage ended in 2007.

- In a 2002 TV interview, Houston admitted using marijuana, cocaine, alcohol and prescription drugs.

- She launched a comeback tour in 2009 and in April 2010 she called media reports she was using drugs again "ridiculous." In May 2011, Houston enrolled in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.

- Houston had begun acting again. She stars in the film "Sparkle," which is set to be released later this year.

Justin Bieber Made A 'Smash' With Far East Movement

Producer RedOne opens up to MTV News about recording session.

Justin Bieber might be singing hooks like a G6 in the very near future. Super-producer RedOne told MTV News that he recently hit the studio with the teen star, and it involved dance-floor phenoms Far East Movement.

"The Bieber thing, I don't know if I'm allowed to mention it right now, but ... I did a few songs with Far East Movement, and one of the songs ... to me, it's a smash," he told us in his Los Angeles-area recording studio. "And Justin sang the chorus. It's a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it."

While any other details about the project are top-secret, Red did praise the 17-year-old's work ethic, maturity and musicality. "He's very positive and he's an amazing singer," he said. "Amazing everything! He's Justin Bieber. He's a sensation. I think he's becoming a man with his voice. He's an incredible singer. So it's not just the dance or the looks or the 'Justin' factor. He's a real singer musician ... He's a real artist."

Currently, Bieber is busy recording his 2012 release, Believe, and there's a chance RedOne could be involved in the album. But it will only happen if the twosome can cook up a choice track. "We're trying to figure out some smashes together for his album," he said.

With RedOne's part on the album still up in the air, there are plenty of other folks onboard with Bieber for the release, including producers Pharrell, Timbaland and will.i.am and rappers Drake and Lil Wayne. Believe will be released later this year.

Stars Support 'Cycle for Survival' At Equinox

No pain, no gain! That?s what stars like Kristin Chenoweth, Maria Bello, Seth Meyers and Survivor?s Ethan Zohn were thinking when they came out to support Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center?s sixth annual Cycle for Survival event.

Ethan, who has been battling Hodgkin?s lymphoma, rode along with his longtime girlfriend ? and fellow Survivor contestant - Jenna Morasca, proving his dedication to raising awareness and finding a cure. The event, which took place at Equinox locations in NYC, Long Island, Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and LA and drew nearly 10,000 participants, raised $7.7 million.

?With the dollars raised by Cycle for Survival from 2007 through 2011, we have initiated 25 clinical trials and research studies on rare cancers that might not have otherwise received funding,? said Dr. Gary Schwartz, chief of the Melanoma and Sarcoma Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. ?We are incredibly grateful for this year?s record-breaking donation and are looking forward to quickly activating new studies and trials to develop new therapeutic approaches to benefit patients worldwide.?

Guatemala pres: Drug war requires more than arms

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) ? Guatemala's first president with a military background in 25 years said Tuesday the drug war can't be won with arms alone, and pledged that his administration will focus on fighting hunger, which he called a security problem.

In an interview with The Associated Press one day after he promised to propose legalizing drugs in Guatemala, President Otto Perez Molina said the Central American country isn't following U.S. orders, despite American opposition to legalization.

"We are not doing what the United States says, we are doing what we have to do," said Perez, who was elected on promises of an "iron-fist" approach to rampant crime and surprised observers by proposing drug legalization.

Perez, a retired army general who took office one month ago, said his proposal to legalize drugs does not represent an about face from his campaign, in which he promised to get touch on crime.

He said he has always focused on a more comprehensive approach for addressing one of the highest murder rates in the world.

"Hunger is also violence, and is also a security problem," he said.

The outside world "has only focused on the fact that I am a retired general and participated in the domestic armed conflict," he said, referring to Guatemala's 1960-1996 civil war, in which an estimated 200,000 people were killed.

Guatemala needs "to find alternate ways of fighting drug trafficking. In the last 30 years with a traditional combat with arms and deaths, it can't be done, and we have to be open to viable alternatives."

On Monday, Perez said he will try to win regional support for drug legalization at an upcoming summit of Central American leaders next month.

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala issued a statement Sunday saying that legalizing drugs wouldn't stop transnational gangs that traffic not only drugs, but also people and weapons.

Drug cartels have taken over large swathes of Guatemala and other Central American countries, fueling some of the highest murder rates in the world. A May 2011 report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service said that 95 percent of all cocaine entering the United States flows through Mexico and its waters, with 60 percent of that cocaine having first transited through Central America.

Authorities say both the Zetas and the Sinaloa cartels from Mexico are running and processing drugs in Guatemala and may be competing for territory, especially in the province of Peten near the border with Mexico.

Silvio Berlusconi Trial: Prosecutors Seek 5-Year Term

MILAN, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors on Wednesday asked a court to sentence former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to five years in prison on charges of paying British lawyer David Mills a $600,000 bribe to lie about Berlusconi's business interests.
Mills, husband of former British cabinet minister Tessa Jowell, has had a 4-1/2-year jail sentence for taking the bribe dropped as a statute of limitations took effect.
Should Berlusconi be found guilty, the verdict would be little more than symbolic as his lawyers would appeal and the case would have to be dropped because the alleged crime dates back to 1997 - and would also fall under a statute of limitations.
Berlusconi, 75, is also trial on charges of tax fraud and of paying for sex with an underage prostitute, and is due to go on trial on March 15 on charges of revealing confidential information in a case related to a 2005 banking scandal. (Reporting By Sara Rossi; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Here is information about skin cancer that no one will tell you. The sun is actually our friend, not our foe. We all need sun exposure as it? essential for all life on earth and has very little to do with why there is so much skin cancer or melanomas today. Find out the real reason why the cancer rates are increasing as it? something else that? changed and not only causing skin cancer but all cancers.

It is certainly true that ultraviolet light causes skin damage and there is no such thing as a healthy tan but there is certainly such a thing as a healthy amount of sun exposure that every person needs each day. Also the vitamin D deficiency disease, rickets is making a comeback now days because we are not getting enough sun exposure to maintain our health.

The most lethal form of skin cancer is melanoma and it is more common in people who work indoors rather than people who work outdoors. That is, an office worker is far more likely to get a melanoma than a farmer. In fair skin people melanomas commonly occur on men? back or on the tops of women? legs and not on areas where we get the most sun exposure like the face or the hands. In dark skin people who are less likely to develop melanomas, they get it on there backs or the soles of their feet. Also a very close friend of mine has just been diagnosed with a melanoma in a place that has never seen the sun.

There is now evidence of a huge range of benefits from regular exposure to the sun because of the vitamin D which is manufactured in our skin through the direct action of the sun. Until recently vitamin D was seen as unimportant except for the development of healthy bones and teeth. Now recent research has shown that vitamin D is involved in everything from brain development to the proper function of the immune system.

We are often told to keep out of the sun but in fact the sun is beneficial in keeping us free of cancer, which includes skin cancer because of the vitamin D our skin makes through sun exposure. We need only a few minutes of sun a day on bare arms and face whereas people with darker skin need a little more to get the same amount of vitamin D. This vitamin is also available in supplements and some foods but the most effective way is through the sun.

Because the rate of skin cancer has increased alarmingly over the last few years we can? really blame the sun because the sun hasn? changed and isn? changing. Also the ozone layer that protects us from harmful radiation from the sun is only a problem over the Antarctic where nobody lives. Daily sun exposure is essentially for maintaining life for all living creatures including human beings.

I don? advocate the use of sun screens either; they can actually cause cancer as they block the skin from absorbing the suns rays. Of course that? what they are supposed to do but in doing so they stop the skin from absorbing the important vitamin D that the body needs to prevent many diseases, including cancer.

So what is causing so much cancer now days? The increase is because of the way we now live, especially with the food we eat. What we now eat has changed where as prior to this our diet hasn? changed for thousands of years.

All skin cancers are an entirely curable disease and our modern medical approaches are not the most effective way to heal someone of the problem. They are only treating the symptoms which are the growths themselves instead of searching for a reason why the cancer first grew. It? easy to blame the sun as that allows people to submit to their orthodox treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy which are all money orientated. Also there is nothing in those treatments that will stop any skin cancer from spreading or returning. Treating skin cancer today is a huge industry and the only thing they are not doing is reducing the mortality rate.

Don?t overdo the sunshine, but sunshine is essential for the production of vitamin D, and, strange as it may sound, has been found to be essential in warding off melanomas as well as all other cancers.
