Sony Xperia TX video preview

Sony's IFA 2012 announcements were primarily about the bigger picture, both in terms of the company's One Sony strategy and in the literal sense that the Japanese giant showed off its first 84-inch 4K TV. Still, almost out of habit, Sony also refreshed its Android smartphone lineup with a trio of new handsets: the Xperia T / TX, the Xperia V and the Xperia J.

The distinction between the two versions of the flagship T device is actually bigger than Sony would have you believe: The Germany-only Xperia T has a dual-core Qualcomm processor, clocked at 1.5GHz, is thicker than the Europe-wide Xperia TX, positions the power button differently, and has a slightly less unified design. The specs are otherwise a total match, including the 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display, 13-megapixel Exmor R camera, and Android 4.0 OS.

Solidly built and solidly specced, but not really ruffling any feathers of excitement

Both handsets take inspiration from Sony's successful Xperia Arc smartphone of 2011, including the subtle concave curve of the back (now even subtler), though they upgrade the back cover with a new soft-touch matte surface that feels a lot better in the hand than the glossy plastic of the Arc. Alas, Sony couldn't restrain itself from injecting glossy sheen entirely, and there's a reflective strip wrapping around the sides of the Xperia TX, framing the display in an unnecessary sliver of glitz.

Overall, the Xperia TX feels solidly built and solidly specced, but it's not really ruffling any feathers of excitement. Then again, unlike more ambitious launches from Samsung and LG recently, the TX and its T sibling will be on sale within the next couple of weeks. They'll be joined then by the Xperia V and Xperia J, with the V being essentially a T series phone shrunken to 4.3 inches and enhanced with water resistance, while the J aims for the budget-minded with a much more trimmed-down spec sheet.

How Joining Clubs And Teams Can Improve Your Business Sales ...

Posted by?lazaroscho47?in?Wednesday, August 29th 2012???

I never used to be described as a fan of groups and social gatherings but I always believed that to market my services more effectively, I would have to be a part of some sort of business where I can network with business owners like me.On the net this is an easy task to do. Web entrepreneurs use methods such as for example Skype to communicate with fellow business owners hundreds of miles away, but in the offline world, we don?t have happy the technology to form brainstorming groups.Well I assume there is a method to brainstorm in the offline world of marketing. You can hold convention calls, website molds via Cisco application, and live shows. Many of these ways are excellent ways to obtain usage of the latest guidelines and information that can help you to remain together with the marketplace. But exactly what do you do if you don?t have the technology that I stated above? Well it is fairly simple actually. You could decrease to your neighborhood chamber of commerce and network with the business owners there. You won?t ever know very well what kind of information these folks have to supply, and many of the things that they?ve learned could be placed on any business. This may be the quality of advertising. Practices that work for others might work for you also. A lot of the time all it takes is straightforward tune to help make the idea work for you also. For example, I?m pretty sure that you run newspaper ads or yellow pages ads, and might be some of the members at the chamber of commerce run these ads also. But if one business owners is making more cash from their ads than you?re from yours, you should ask this business operator what they?re doing to create their marketing work for you. Once the business manager tells you what they do, you can use the same strategy to see improved results from your ads.So one strategy that works for others can work for you too with the proper method. There are numerous more teams that you could join to link up with other business owners (nationally) and share ideas about how to make a particular method work. One good destination for a find people such as this is at the forums on the internet.I individually post in a forum on the web called the ?Warrior Forum.? This is a forum where like oriented business owners gather and share ideas on how best to make more money within our businesses. And based on your niche, I?m pretty sure you can find forums that will fit you and your business.Joining clubs, communities, and organizations can be considered a good way to promote and earn more money in your business. As it pertains to marketing, 2 minds actually are much better than your brain is put by one.So to think and work about more organizations that one may join to create more money in your business. Be an active participant, and focus on making new friends. It is one of the best things that you can certainly do for your business.Good luck with using the idea of networking to boost your earnings and sales.

Craigslist adds maps to Portland, Bay Area listings

22 hrs.

Craigslist?has just started integrating maps into some of its listings, but instead of going with Google or Microsoft, the site?went with the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap. The changes are live right now if you're in Portland, Oregon or the San Francisco Bay Area.

Craigslist is famous for never updating its look and feel, meaning things are quick and clean if?a bit stark. But with apartment listings especially, mapping the location is such a standard action that people looking for a new place would be opening dozens of browser?tabs for Google Maps.

In fact, the process of looking at Craigslist ads by location became both so popular and so difficult that a site called PadMapper started up as a way to let people do it more easily. Craigslist actually asked them to stop in June, but clearly they also took the point that maps are now critical information for apartment searches.

But using something like Google Maps institutionally (as opposed to individually) would come with significant cost ? so Craigslist decided to use OpenStreetMap, a system that, like Wikipedia, is created from publicly available information and the?contributions of users.

The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that unlike Google and Microsoft, OpenStreetMap doesn't have millions of dollars to spend on mapping small towns and rural areas, or for checking the accuracy of existing maps. Their community is constantly revising and adding to the database, but their information simply isn't as complete as the bigger, more well-funded services.

That doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly good map of much of the world ? but it doesn't have bells and whistles like driving directions or Street View. It's certainly good enough for Craigslist's purposes, but for now the company is only rolling it out to Portland and the Bay Area, since those areas are well-mapped and have plenty of housing?listings with which?to test the service.

There's no indication of when the integrated maps will come to other areas (or perhaps be rolled out universally), but if they're well-received it seems likely they'll soon be activated for any areas Craigslist feels are represented accurately by the maps. If you're in a big, tech-savvy city like New York or Los Angeles, that will likely be soon, but for smaller towns, it could be a while. In the meantime, you can test it out by browsing housing in either of the areas currently covered.

Ukraine's highest court upholds guilty verdict for ex-PM Tymoshenko

KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine's highest court on Wednesday upheld the guilty verdict against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is in jail on abuse of office charges.

Tymoshenko was an architect of Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution that promoted democracy and a runner-up in the 2010 presidential election. She was sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2011, when she was found guilty of exceeding her powers while negotiating a gas contract with Russia while she was prime minister.

Her supporters say the trial is a politically motivated attempt by her rival, President Viktor Yanukovich, to keep her out of October elections. The government denies the accusations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tymoshenko's counterpart in signing the gas deal, has said there was nothing illegal in her actions.

Judge Oleksandr Elfimov said as he was reading the ruling that the court had "found no grounds to uphold (Tymoshenko's) appeal" of the verdict, and that the prison term is "adequate to the gravity of the crime."

Several members of the audience yelled "Shame!" upon hearing the verdict.

The court hearing was attended by former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and former President of the European Parliament Patrick Cox.

"This and past court rulings have nothing to do with justice," said Tymoshenko aide Oleksandr Turchinov.

Lawyers for Tymoshenko are appealing the conviction in the European Court for Human Rights.

Tymoshenko's daughter Eugenia described the hearing as a "shameful decision, which proves one more time that a dictatorship has come to Ukraine."

Kyiv-based political analyst Mykhailo Pogrebinsky said Wednesday's ruling "has brought Ukraine's legal system into a deadlock."

"Criminal prosecution for a political decision can hardly be called the rule of law," he said.

Tymoshenko's following remains strong in Ukraine, where demonstrations at the prison in support of her are frequent.

At least 500 hundred supporters gathered Wednesday outside the courthouse in Kyiv, chanting "Freedom to Yulia!"

After the hearing, Tymoshenko's supporters held a mock funeral procession, carrying a small coffin with a figure of Themis, the Greek goddess of justice, inside. They buried the coffin in the courthouse's yard and erected a cross with the plaque: "Ukraine's justice lies here."

The Hodge-Podge Gallery: The Screenplay vs. The Novel

Continuing my writing series, I first talked about my process then tackled inspiration. Now?I'm taking you down the more technical road to explain the differences between a screenplay and a novel (and there are many). ?This may come as a shock, but writing a novel is different from writing a screenplay as they're two completely opposing mediums. Who knew??

All forms of art begin the same way: an idea. Depending on the interpretation, one idea elicits boundless results in many forms. Give ten painters one subject and no painting will resemble another. Give ten screenwriters one idea, one "logline" as its known in the Industry, and suddenly you'll have ten different films from which to choose.

After the "Idea" phase, the novel and the screenplay move in separate directions. Being an artistic medium made up entirely of paper and ink, a good book requires endless descriptions of people, places, things, smells, sounds, and emotions. Ever read Tolkien? Authors create entire worlds filled with cities made up of classes and communities full of diverse characters human or otherwise doing and saying interesting things. These stimulating visuals surround a story enriched by themes, philosophies, and conflicts hopefully felt in some degree by the reader to create connection. A novel IS the medium whereas a script is the blueprint of the medium of film.

Like the plans for a building laid out by an architect, a screenplay has parameters in which it must remain, the main two being time and structure. Most films are ninety minutes to two hours with exceptions like Disney animated features coming in around eighty minutes and large scale epics like Lord of the Rings reaching the three hour mark. Novice screenwriters will want to whittle FINAL drafts down to around ninety minutes. Conciseness is key in filmmaking as Time. Is. Money.

As for structure, if a script lacks proper structure and grammar, a Reader will throw it out. Period. Some executives make exceptions toward grammar if the story and characters are unbelievable. In terms of structure, each scene requires a scene heading, descriptions are short, dialogue is written with the character's name in all caps and his/her words centered underneath. Page numbers are in the top right corner, use black Courier font, a script must have a title page, and there are absolutely no pictures or gimmicks: let the film speak for itself.

Visual, present tense, action-filled writing is the only acceptable style for scripts. If a writer can't SHOW it then whatever "It" is needs to go; no subjectivity or emotions. Unless a screenwriter can show a character's feelings that part is left to directors and actors. For example, "Seeing his friend's grave made Aaron sad" is unacceptable and amateur. Something like "As Aaron reaches the top of the hill, a small gravestone reading "Dan Smith: Loyal Son, Brother, and Friend" comes into view. Approaching the stone, Aaron drops to his knees, pounds his fists into the ground, and sobs."

For fun (as I believe writing should ALWAYS BE FUN-- take that Hollywood!!), I stylize my writing when describing people (and places) as it keeps me on my toes. Instead of introducing a character as "JAMIE, 27, blond, tall, and heavy-set wearing skinny jeans and a T-shirt..." I would write "JAMIE, a long-legged 27 year old whose curvaceous frame remains stylish at any size with a perpetual smirk plastered on her perfectly made-up face..."

Dialogue is s whole other matter that will be saved for a future post.

Furthermore, the position of a Novelist is solitary work. You can lock yourself away in a remote cabin somewhere in the north woods with nothing but you and your computer, and write until your fingers fall off. Your publisher will send you notes for revisions. Writing the initial screenplay might require a Screenwriter to lock himself away until he finishes the first few drafts, but once the script moves into the hands of agents and producers, kiss any power you had over your work goodbye (unless you're Charlie Kauffman, Quentin Tarantino, or Aaron Sorkin). Everyone gets a say in the revisions, from financiers to producers to the director to the actors-- even other screenwriters may be brought in to rewrite the script. In fact, unless the writer is also producing and directing (and most of the time this spells disaster *cough* M. Night Shyamalan *cough*), he is last in the filmmaking chain of command.

Yet, the writing process and basics remain the same for novels and screenplays. Both need intriguing stories with compelling conflict; both require dimensional characters who elicit emotional reactions from readers. Every writer dreads the blank screen and blinking cursor, experiences Block, and thinks everything he writes is shit and he should have been a doctor like his parents always wanted. No work is ever complete and always needs further polish, though, as someone who grew up drawing and singing, this attitude is adopted by artists in any form.

So why do I write? Am I masochistic or utterly vain? I write because I have something to say and writing is the best way for me to do it.

Why can't all hunter pets become viable in all situations?

This is something I have been asking for since cata came out. We have pet talent points, now we have a brand new talent system. There are so many pets for hunters to collect but not all of them have that cat/wolf buff that your raid will always need.

The question is why can't pet buff benefits be part of the talent system? That way you can specify how you want a certain pet to buff a raid? This would allow players to raid with any pet they want! Imagine raiding with a nether ray or a beetle without getting kicked for not providing that buff the raid wants.

When I walk around SW every single hunter either has a cat or a spirit beast if they are BM. It makes me forget about things like sporebats, or silithids.

So why did blizzard not include beneficial pet buffs in its new pet talent system? Why are hunters still forced to use "cat or dog". :/

Winner of most 2012 Olympic defections: Cameroon

Economic misery (or opportunity) drives many Olympic athletes to defect in modern times, but political defections still plague communist bloc teams such as Cuba.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / August 15, 2012

Paddy Barnes of Ireland (r.) makes contact with Thomas Essomba of Cameroon, during their fight at the men's light flyweight boxing competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This year, 15 African athletes and coaches have defected, with Cameroon in the lead - seven of its 37 athletes have been confirmed missing, including Essomba.

This year?s Olympics in London brought news of Olympic athletes who defected, disappeared, or went on the run, some of them before they even had a chance to compete, more than 20 at last count. Olympic defections are a relatively common affair, but the end of the cold war in 1989 meant that most modern sports defections ? with the possible exception of Cuba, the grand champion of defection ? are largely economically motivated.

This year, 15 African athletes and coaches have defected, with Cameroon in the lead ? seven of its 37 athletes?have been confirmed missing. The first to leave was Drusille Ngako, a goalkeeper on the women?s soccer team, followed soon after by swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue, and boxers Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack?Adjoufack, Mewoli?Abdon, Blaise Yepmou?Mendouo,?and Serge Ambomo.

Athletes weren?t the only ones to disappear. Four Congolese team members, including a coach and a technical athletic director, also failed to return to their home countries after the Olympic Games ended last week.

Ethiopia also deserves honorable mention for the disappearance of 15-year-old torch bearer Nathaniel Yemane, who was later found ?safe and well? in Nottingham. Apparently, Nathaniel simply got lost.?

Think Your Estate Planning is Done? Think Again!

Mark AlbertsonFirst, don?t worry.? That will or living trust you did is probably just fine (you have had it reviewed in the last five years, correct?) and all those other documents your attorney drafted for you are probably all up-to-date and in a safe and secure place.? But there may be one, last, and very important item you might not have with your estate planning documents: A letter of instruction.

The Challenges of Modern Society

I know that you know that it?s a different world today, but technology and society have changed.? I always tell people that your estate planning documents are simply an expression of what you want to have happen should you become incapacitated, or after you pass away.

Having practiced law this year for 25 years means many things.? One thing that it means is that I have seen a variety of circumstances that have complicated the administration of estates after people pass away.? Because we live in an internet world, if you think of all of the parts of our life that are wrapped up in that world, you can quickly see that there is information you need to pass on to your loved ones that may be critical to settling your estate.? What about your online banking password?? What about information on your investment accounts, and your bill paying service, and even on your Facebook account?? Who would have control of these things, and how would they get control, unless you tell them about the accounts you have, and how to access them?? That?s one of the purposes of a letter of instruction.

It?s not only important to put critical information down on paper for the people you choose to administrate your estate, but to keep that information with your estate documents, and in a safe place.

Here are some examples of other information, not typically found in a will, that you should put in writing and keep with your estate documents:

  • A list of people to contact when you die and a list of beneficiaries of your estate plan
  • The location of important documents, such as your will, insurance policies, financial statements, deeds, and birth certificate
  • A list of assets, such as bank accounts, investment accounts, insurance policies, real estate holdings, and military benefits
  • Passwords and PIN numbers for online accounts
  • The location of any safe deposit boxes
  • A list of contact information for lawyers, financial planners, brokers, tax preparers, and insurance agents
  • A list of credit card accounts and other debts
  • A list of organizations that you belong to that should be notified in the event of your death (for example, professional organizations or boards)
  • Instructions for a funeral or memorial service
  • Instructions for distribution of sentimental personal items
  • A personal message to family members

I know it may be disappointing to think that you?re not quite done.? But each of these are very important instructions to pass on, also.

?

Analysis: Balancing act for India in overhaul of archaic land law

MUMBAI (Reuters) - More than a century after it was drawn up by British colonial rulers, India's land acquisition law is finally set for a revamp that promises to breathe life into scores of frozen industrial and infrastructure projects and help lift the sagging economy.

That's the optimistic scenario.

The reality is that the new law will make the cost of land much higher for businesses and is unlikely to put a stop to protests by millions of people determined to defend their livelihoods or get fair compensation for losing their land.

The new bill will govern land acquisition by the government for itself and by private firms to provide public services. This will embrace a wide range of projects in sectors from power and telecommunications to transport and education.

Among the major projects which have stalled awaiting the new legislation are 12-million-tonne steel plants planned by Posco and ArcelorMittal and a six-million-metric ton steel plant of Tata Steel in Odisha, as well as Coal India's mine expansion in Chattisgarh.

More than 80 highway projects are also running behind schedule.

Despite the promise of greater transparency and better regulation, corporate India is worried about cost.

The new law may force them to pay four times the market price for land in rural areas and twice the market price in urban areas, and give displaced people homes, jobs, monthly stipends and even a share of their profits in some cases.

Even if companies enter into private negotiations for land, they will be required to rehabilitate people if they acquire over 100 acres of rural land or 50 acres in urban areas.

The Confederation of Indian Industry lobby group estimates that this will increase land acquisition costs by 3-3.5 times, affecting the viability of projects across the board.

Companies are bracing for increased costs and may tweak project plans, but they're unlikely to ditch projects altogether, having invested years negotiating with state governments and landowners.

ArcelorMittal's boss Lakshmi Mittal said recently his India projects were unlikely to see light for several years because of unresolved policy issues. But a spokeswoman said they were continuing negotiations despite likely cost increases.

The government has tried twice to amend the 118-year-old legislation, but until now it has failed to balance demands for an end to the regulatory minefield that confronts developers with a popular clamor to protect the poor.

Even as the government prepared last week to introduce its latest version of the Land Acquisition act in parliament, social activists gathered in New Delhi to protest against a law their leaders said falls "far too short of democratic expectation".

"The redrafted bill ... though accepting certain provisions as suggested by social movements, is pro-market and pro-investment and will only further the land conflict," said Medha Patkar, who led a high-profile campaign over two decades against the construction of a huge dam to prevent thousands of tribal people being evicted from their homeland.

Safeguarding farmland against the creep of industrialization to ensure food security is a priority for the left-leaning government led by Sonia Gandhi's Congress party, which relies heavily on rural voters for support.

Back in 2004, when it came to power, Congress pledged to overhaul a law whose wide definition of "public use" means people can be turfed without much ado off their land, and which omitted to lay down rules for compensation and rehabilitation.

The government now appears confident that the bill - whose final contours have yet to be made public - will at last be passed despite the fierce partisanship of the main opposition party, which has made a habit of blocking reform.

"No party would commit political hara-kiri by opposing the bill as every party is committed to the farmers' cause," said a senior official at the Rural Development Ministry who asked not to be named.

AIRPORT DELAY

The trick that the government must pull off with the new legislation, however, is mollifying both the social activists and India Inc.

Over 200 government projects and several industrial ones have stalled due to land-use snags, contributing to the country's sharpest economic slowdown in a decade and stifling much-needed growth in employment.

Among the many frustrations for developers are a lack of property deeds, which leads to prolonged legal battles, the difficulty of bringing together scattered smallholdings of land and the cost of servicing project debt as they wait for acquisition clearances.

"Some politicians are clearly posturing on this issue to get political gain but there is a clear demand from industrial groups, infrastructure developers etc to spell out the processes of land acquisition and amend the law," said Seema Desai, an analyst at political risk research consultant Eurasia.

Take the grand plan for a new international airport near Mumbai, which was envisaged more than a decade ago to relieve pressure on the financial capital's existing airport.

A blue signboard overlooking a vast expanse of waterlogged land with hillocks to one side is all there is to show for the project so far. This is because although environmental clearance was granted two years ago, villagers who own 24 percent of the land are holding out for a higher compensation package.

Mahindra Patil, headman of a village that sits on the airport site, said his people want developed land equivalent to 35 percent of the area they are losing and 25 million rupees ($455,000) per acre.

"If they don't agree, the airport will not come up here," said Patil from his cramped office on the edge of lush green paddy fields. "We have been doing farming and fishing here for ages. This is our wealth, how much more will we sacrifice? We will not compromise beyond this."

Land troubles have also plagued special export-oriented zones, which were intended to hasten India's industrialization. Companies including Reliance Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra, Indiabulls and Videocon have scrapped plans because land could not be acquired.

Aditi Nayar, a senior economist at rating agency ICRA, said the new land bill is urgently needed to ensure that businesses know at an early stage about the viability of proposed projects.

"Increasing the share of manufacturing to 25 pct of GDP under the National Manufacturing Policy would be difficult to achieve without significant land being acquired," she said.

The government dismisses industry's fears of higher costs.

"The land acquisition will not cost more than 2-3 percent of the total project cost, while saving a substantial amount spent over delays and legal battles," the Rural Development Ministry official said.

In what will be a huge relief to existing project owners, a proposal to apply the new acquisition regulations retrospectively is likely to be ditched by the government.

The bill is also expected to propose the establishment of a quasi-judicial body to settle disputes over compensation within six months, doing away with the practice of going to lower civil courts where cases routinely drag on for years.

But social activists believe that the new law, despite its provisions to make compensation fairer, will build in a bias towards land developers at the expense of small landholders.

"The current bill legitimizes land acquisition of most kinds and by anyone even for private profit, and is only trying to play with language of transparency and fair compensation," the Sangharsh (struggle) protest group said in a statement.

Creative Suggestions For Baby Shower Centerpieces ? Prams For ...

Baby showers are wonderful and thoughtful methods of welcoming a new baby into the family and assist in providing many essentials a new infant will require. Decorating for such an event is sometimes quite a challenge ? shower centerpieces are usually focal points on tabletops, at the sign-in table and in the middle of buffet tables. Using creativity and some simple objects, putting together this decor will be easy and fun.

Diaper cakes are a re-usable and fun way to supply centerpieces for a party. Make them yourself ahead of time or hire an expert to put them together. For extra visibility, be sure to use colored diapers and bright accessories. This is an especially thoughtful gift as the many items can be re-used by the new mother for the weeks to come.

Actually using newborn baby gifts as focal points on the table is also very creative. Colorful stacked blocks, jungle-themed stuffed toys and baby dolls dressed in infant clothing makes for interesting and recyclable displays. Larger baby items such as baby baskets, carriers and umbrella strollers can be filled with accessories and placed in the middle of buffet tables for even more eye appeal and impact.

A quick trip to a toy store or discount center can supply you with baby doll furniture which can be utilized in the center of the tables. They can be filled with pacifiers, baby travel supplies, small items of clothing and other baby essentials. A talented florist can arrange pastel flowers which fit perfectly in a toy stroller, crib or walker.

Delicate clairs, cream puffs and miniature cupcakes will make yummy centerpieces when elevated on a cupcake holder or cake stand. The use of colorful doilies and baby cake accessories can make this really stand out. Guests will appreciate having their sweet desserts so handy for them to enjoy at the end of their meal.

Anchor colorful balloons to baby bottles or blocks and place on the tabletops and on the buffet. Add an extra special touch and personalize the balloons with the infant?s name, a baby announcement or the details of the shower. Small children at the event can be allowed to take the centerpieces home with them at the conclusion of the event.

Shower centerpieces can be colorful and creative ? all it takes is some thought and inexpensive supplies. The use of color, height, and personalization will make these arrangements extra special. Many of these can be re-used at other events or utilized for the new baby.

(08/24) Pemex Oil Spill in Oaxaca, Mexico, Threatens Sea Turtles and World-Class Surfing Beaches

PRESS RELEASE

A PEMEX oil spill in the port of Salina Cruz in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca went uncontained for 11 days along Pacific Coast beaches, impacting more than 12 miles of coastline.

The spill has so far resulted in the deaths of 13 sea turtles and tarred beaches with oil revered by surfers worldwide for their wave quality.

"The beaches of southern Oaxaca are Mexico's most important for nesting Olive Ridley sea turtles and surfing tourism," said Dr. Eduardo Najera, the Mexico Director for WiLDCOAST. "We are requesting that Mexican federal authorities investigate the cause of the spill and require PEMEX to quickly and thoroughly clean up its mess."

Beaches impacted by the oil spill include Salinas del Marqu?s, Brasil, Brasilito, Azul, Punta Conejo, La Escondida-Guelaguichi, Playa Cangrejo, and Chipehua.

Conservationists are concerned that the petroleum could harm the 500,000 Olive Ridley sea turtles that lay their eggs on Morro Ayuta beach located north of the oil spill area.

Federal sea turtle monitors reported that clumps of oil have appeared along the more than 14-mile beach, considered among the world's most important nesting beaches. More than 25,000 Olive Ridleys arrived on Morro Ayuta during the three days proceeding the oil spill.

During a recent tour of the region by WiLDCOAST, there was no evidence of any effort by PEMEX to clean up beaches and wildlife impacted by the spill.

"Pemex must be required to clean up and restore all of the ecosystems damaged by the oil spill to the fullest extent possible," said Najera. "Indigenous communities, families and businesses that make their living from fishing, surfing and eco-tourism must be compensated for their losses as a result of damage from the spill."

WiLDCOAST is an international conservation team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife. www.wildcoast.net.

Sony Xperia J ST26i official image leaks

Sony Xperia J ST26i official image leaks Sony seems to be on a mission to flood the market with as many smartphones as possible. The latest member of this crusade is the Xperia J ST26i, which was spotted by ePrice.

The Xperia J will be a mid-range budget smartphone that comes with a 4-inch, 854 x 480 resolution display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7227A processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera and a 1,700mAh battery. The phone is likely to be running on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Xperia J looks a lot like the older Xperia arc, with the same curved backside designed to aid grip. From the front, however, it bears more resemblance to some of Sony's recent models. The bottom of the phone is said to have multi-colored LEDs such as the ones on the Xperia U.

There is no information available regarding the pricing or the launch date of this handset.

Romney's Energy Plan Doubles Down On Fossil Fuels

Evan Vucci/AP Photo

In unveiling his energy policy during a campaign event on Aug. 23, Mitt Romney says he wants to set a goal of North American energy independence by 2020.

Mitt Romney outlined an energy plan Thursday that would guide his Republican presidency. It focuses heavily on expanding the supply of fossil fuels. The presumptive nominee said the U.S., Mexico and Canada together could reach energy independence by 2020.

But the plan makes no mention of climate change and would end subsidies for cleaner sources of energy, such as wind and solar.

Romney unveiled the energy plan at a campaign stop in New Mexico, where he fought the wind as he showed flip-charts of his policy. That was wind's major appearance in a speech that was overwhelmingly about fossil fuels.

The plan would open up oil and gas development off the Atlantic Coast, as well as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And he proposed putting states in charge of regulating oil and gas development on federal lands to speed its development.

"Three million jobs come back to this country, by taking advantage of something we have right underneath our feet," Romney said. "That's oil and gas and coal. We're going to make it happen; we're going to create those jobs."

The Romney energy plan, laid out in a 21-page white paper, relies heavily on creating deeper partnerships with Mexico and Canada. Mexico could use technical help to reverse its declining oil production, he said, and "Canada has oil sands. We're going to take advantage of those, and build that Keystone pipeline and work with Canada to make sure we have advantage of their great energy sources."

All told, that would dramatically boost oil and gas production, the candidate said.

"I will set a national goal of ... North American energy independence by 2020."

The Romney white paper cites a study by Citibank showing that's possible ? provided there are sharp efforts to reduce energy demand. But energy conservation is not part of the Romney plan.

Energy independence is often cited as a way to be free of price fluctuations caused by conflicts in oil-rich regions. But that wouldn't actually lock in stable oil prices.

"Last year, when civil war broke out in Libya and oil markets were deeply disrupted, the price of oil from Canada went up by more in percentage terms than oil from the Middle East," says Michael Levi from the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Prices are driven by the global market, regardless of where we buy the oil from, because if the world price skyrockets, our trading partners would cash in on that. Overall, Levi praises some of the fossil-fuel proposals in the Romney plan, though he says it only addresses part of the energy picture.

"The word climate does not appear in the energy plan. That is a conspicuous absence," Levi says.

You can't deal with climate change without finding ways to reduce burning fossil fuels, and that's not in the Romney plan. Indeed, the Republican says he does not want to continue subsidizing wind and solar energy, which are clean supplies of energy.

That drew a rebuke from White House.

"While the Republican approach denigrates forms of energy like wind, this president believes that investing in renewable energy is essential to enhancing our energy independence," said spokesman Jay Carney.

In his energy speech, Romney framed the matter quite differently.

"Sometimes, I have the impression that the whole regulatory attitude of the administration is trying to stop oil and gas and coal," Romney said. "That they don't want those sources, that instead they want to get those things so expensive and so rare that wind and solar become highly cost effective and efficient."

Romney said he likes wind and solar "as much as the next person," but those technologies should rise or fall simply on their economic merits.

America's Descent into Poverty | Peak Oil News and Message Boards

America?s Descent into Poverty thumbnail

The United States has collapsed economically, socially, politically, legally, constitutionally, and environmentally. The country that exists today is not even a shell of the country into which I was born. In this article I will deal with America?s economic collapse. In subsequent articles, i will deal with other aspects of American collapse.

Economically, America has descended into poverty. As Peter Edelman says, ?Low-wage work is pandemic.? Today in ?freedom and democracy? America, ?the world?s only superpower,? one fourth of the work force is employed in jobs that pay less than $22,000, the poverty line for a family of four. Some of these lowly-paid persons are young college graduates, burdened by education loans, who share housing with three or four others in the same desperate situation. Other of these persons are single parents only one medical problem or lost job away from homelessness.

Others might be Ph.D.s teaching at universities as adjunct professors for $10,000 per year or less. Education is still touted as the way out of poverty, but increasingly is a path into poverty or into enlistments into the military services.

Edelman, who studies these issues, reports that 20.5 million Americans have incomes less than $9,500 per year, which is half of the poverty definition for a family of three.

There are six million Americans whose only income is food stamps. That means that there are six million Americans who live on the streets or under bridges or in the homes of relatives or friends. Hard-hearted Republicans continue to rail at welfare, but Edelman says, ?basically welfare is gone.?

In my opinion as an economist, the official poverty line is long out of date. The prospect of three people living on $19,000 per year is farfetched. Considering the prices of rent, electricity, water, bread and fast food, one person cannot live in the US on $6,333.33 per year. In Thailand, perhaps, until the dollar collapses, it might be done, but not in the US.

As Dan Ariely (Duke University) and Mike Norton (Harvard University) have shown empirically, 40% of the US population, the 40% less well off, own 0.3%, that is, three-tenths of one percent, of America?s personal wealth. Who owns the other 99.7%? The top 20% have 84% of the country?s wealth. Those Americans in the third and fourth quintiles?essentially America?s middle class?have only 15.7% of the nation?s wealth. Such an unequal distribution of income is unprecedented in the economically developed world.

In my day, confronted with such disparity in the distribution of income and wealth, a disparity that obviously poses a dramatic problem for economic policy, political stability, and the macro management of the economy, Democrats would have demanded corrections, and Republicans would have reluctantly agreed.

But not today. Both political parties whore for money.

The Republicans believe that the suffering of poor Americans is not helping the rich enough. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are committed to abolishing every program that addresses needs of what Republicans deride as ?useless eaters.?

The ?useless eaters? are the working poor and the former middle class whose jobs were offshored so that corporate executives could receive multi-millions of dollars in performance pay compensation and their shareholders could make millions of dollars on capital gains. While a handful of executives enjoy yachts and Playboy playmates, tens of millions of Americans barely get by.

In political propaganda, the ?useless eaters? are not merely a burden on society and the rich. They are leeches who force honest taxpayers to pay for their many hours of comfortable leisure enjoying life, watching sports events, and fishing in trout streams, while they push around their belongings in grocery baskets or sell their bodies for the next MacDonald burger.

The concentration of wealth and power in the US today is far beyond anything my graduate economic professors could image in the 1960s. At four of the world?s best universities that I attended, the opinion was that competition in the free market would prevent great disparities in the distribution of income and wealth. As I was to learn, this belief was based on an ideology, not on reality.

Congress, acting on this erroneous belief in free market perfection, deregulated the US economy in order to create a free market. The immediate consequence was resort to every previous illegal action to monopolize, to commit financial and other fraud, to destroy the productive basis of American consumer incomes, and to redirect income and wealth to the one percent.

The ?democratic? Clinton administration, like the Bush and Obama administrations, was suborned by free market ideology. The Clinton sell-outs to Big Money essentially abolished Aid to Families with Dependent Children. But this sell-out of struggling Americans was not enough to satisfy the Republican Party. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to cut or abolish every program that cushions poverty-stricken Americans from starvation and homelessness.

Republicans claim that the only reason Americans are in need is because the government uses taxpayers? money to subsidize Americans who are unwilling to work. As Republicans see it, while we hard-workers sacrifice our leisure and time with our families, the welfare rabble enjoy the leisure that our tax dollars provide them.

This cock-eyed belief, on top of corporate CEOs maximizing their incomes by offshoring the middle class jobs of millions of Americans, has left Americans in poverty and cities, counties, states, and the federal government without a tax base, resulting in bankruptcies at the state and local level and massive budget deficits at the federal level that threaten the value of the dollar and its role as reserve currency.

The economic destruction of America benefited the mega-rich with multi-billions of dollars with which to enjoy life and its high-priced accompaniments wherever the mega-rich wish. Meanwhile, away from the French Rivera, Homeland Security is collecting sufficient ammunition to keep dispossessed Americans under control.

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts is the father of Reaganomics and the former head of policy at the Department of Treasury. He is a columnist and was previously the editor of the Wall Street Journal. His latest book, ?How the Economy Was Lost: The War of the Worlds,? details why America is disintegrating.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Barcelona rallied to beat Real Madrid 3-2 Thursday night in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, giving Tito Vilanova a victory in his first game as a head coach against Jose Mourinho.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the defending La Liga champions ahead in the 55th minute with a header off a corner kick, only for Pedro Rodriguez to tie the score one minute later for the Copa del Rey winner.

Lionel Messi converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute after Sergio Ramos tripped Andres Iniesta, and Iniesta fed Xavi Hernandez for a 3-1 lead in the 78th, delighting a crowd of 91,728.

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes mis-kicked a backpass in the 85th, allowing substitute Angel Di Maria to get around him for a shot into an open net.

The second leg of the total-goals series is next Thursday in Madrid.

Mourinho poked Vilanova in an eye as Barcelona won the Super Cup last year.
