Here?s a novel idea: chiropractic care is not just for adults, but children can safely be cared for by a doctor of chiropractic. It has been clinically established that chiropractic treatments are very efficient in caring for a wide range of childhood illnesses, including asthmas, attention deficit disorder, and scoliosis, to name a few. Today, we have chosen to dive into the question of the safety of chiropractic adjustments for children.
Chiropractic, of course, is not merely used to handle various diagnoses, but especially useful for preventative purposes. From my years as a doctor of chiropractic, I have had the chance to care for and treat many kids for both purposes. Consequently, I have been asked many questions from apprehensive parents about the safety of chiropractic adjustments for their young ones. Based on my professional experience as a chiropractor, my answer is that, yes, chiropractic is very safe, even for children. As with any other medical practice, it is important to prove this statement with research.
In 2008, Miller and Benfield completed a study with children younger than the age of three years old to determine any adverse effects of chiropractic care. The results of that study were published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Why only children so young? At this age, kids are the most fragile and therefore the most inclined to accidents and injury.
Miller and Benfield?s study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, comprised more than 5,000 chiropractic adjustments, of which fewer than 1% resulted in undesirable side effects for the patients. The side effects that did occur were very mild ? most generally, crying ? in nature and did not need any more medical care. The study results suggest that chiropractic treatment is extremely safe for young kids and adolescents.
During my own time in the office, I have treated many little patients and cannot call to mind any examples of when one of my little patients had any negative or adverse side effects to their treatments. I have cared for and successfully treated kids with a variety of ailments, including, but not limited to, headaches, ear infections, neck and low back pain, whiplash, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, attention deficit disorder, etc.
A lot of my child patients opt for chiropractic treatment as a last resort, after extensive visits to their physician and medical specialists for treatment of their illnesses. A lot of my small patients have been desperate for help after trying all of the other medical options, expensive therapies and difficult tests. Naturally, traditional medicine and pediatric care are both very important, but chiropractic care should not be overlooked; instead, chiropractic care should be recommended as a safe, healthy, and excellent alternative to a physician?s diagnosis and care.
