Today?s 9am Tech brings a recap of the last few days in tech, where some major announcements have been made. In this morning?s episode, we have the Windows Phone 7.8 update, news of two new handsets with 1080p screens, iPhone 5 sales in China, WhatsApp and its big reveal and Gmail?s changes which affect iOS and Windows Phone users. Here?s 9am Tech?
First up is Windows Phone 7.8, which brings a host of new features to existing Windows Phone 7.5 Mango devices. Some of these new features include full use of the width of the screen, resizable live tiles, bluetooth sharing and new accent colours. We saw the Windows Phone 7.8 firmware files leak for the Lumia 800, 900 and 505 and then we heard that Nokia had released the update for the Lumia 800. Nokia went on record yesterday to state this wasn?t the case and the update would not be released until early next year. Want to see what it brings? Take a look at the?Windows Phone 7.8 update running on the Lumia 900.
Next up is ful HD 1080p screens ? yesterday we saw two smartphones leak boasting this technology. The HTC M7 will be the first smartphone to feature a 1080p screen that measures less than 5 inches as the HTC M7 is the successor to the One X+ and comes with a 4.7 inch full HD 1080p screen, 1.7GHz quad-core processor and HTC Sense UI 5. Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia Yuga made another appearance, this time confirming it will boast a 5 inch 1080p full-HD LCD display, quad-core processor and possibly a 16MP camera. It certainly looks like 2013 is the year of 1080p.
Next up is the iPhone 5, which launched in China a couple of weeks back. Apple confirmed that iPhone 5 sales came in at 2 million in the opening weekend in China, which is a sizeable number, even if lower than the 5 million sales achieved in opening weekend in the US.
We also saw WhatsApp released for Windows Phone 8, having been pulled recently. The new update is 6x times faster than the previous app, fully support Windows Phone 8 and so far, it definitely seems like it was worth the wait. At the same time, WhatsApp dealt a potentially crucial blow to RIM?s BlackBerry 10 platform by confirming it had no plans at the moment to launch a native BlackBerry 10 application. RIM?s new platform launches on January 30th next year and without WhatsApp, it?ll be a blow to those hoping to move platforms.
Google also announced changes with Gmail over the weekend, with the biggest announcement revealing that Windows Phone users were in for some uncomfortable moments. Google will be removing Exchange ActiveSync for personal Gmail customers, meaning that platforms will need to support CardDAV and CalDAV to be able to sync user?s Gmail contacts and calendar. Unfortunately Microsoft?s Windows Phone OS doesn?t support either of these profiles, instead using the company?s Exchange ActiveSync solution which means that Microsoft needs to roll out an update to the OS by January 30th or risk users not be able to access contacts or calendar. Competitive move by Google and it?s over to you Microsoft.
