Bee-lines disturbed by predators

Foraging bumblebees change their flying patterns to avoid predators, researchers have found.

The animals are known for their straight forward travel: inspiring the phrase "to make a bee-line".

But scientists at Queen Mary, University of London used artificial spiders to test the flight paths of bees collecting nectar.

The bees travelled straight from flower to flower when spiders were absent, but made more turns when faced with them.

Bees often systematically visit multiple flowers in one single area to collect nectar and scientists refer to this method as a "Levy flight", named after French mathematician Paul Pierre Levy.

But the latest study suggests bees respond to the presence of predators in a more complex way than previously thought, says one of its authors, Dr Rainer Klages from Queen Mary's School of Mathematical Sciences.

Bumblebee buzz

  • There are around 250 species of bumblebee around the world, with 24 species found in the UK
  • They can visit flowers up to 2km away from their colonies, to feed on nectar and gather pollen
  • Buff-tailed bumblebees are the UK's largest species
  • Different species have certain flower preferences: The great yellow bumblebee has a long tongue and forages in flowers where nectar is harder to reach
  • Some bumblebee species are "cuckoos", where females take over another nest instead of making their own. The cuckoo evicts or kills the queen and uses the workers to rear its own offspring

Dr Klages says: "In mathematical theory we treat a bumblebee as a randomly moving object hitting randomly distributed targets.

"Bumblebees in the wild are under the constant risk of predators, such as spiders, so the question we wanted to answer is how such a threat might modify their foraging behaviour."

He explains that velocity - speed in a given direction - is the key to how bees stay safe when seeking food.

"The way the velocities change with time during a flight is characteristically different under predation threat," says Dr Klages.

With spiders present, the researchers found that the bees turned more often, deviating from their usually straight paths.

Special set-up

The experiments were carried out in controlled conditions, with "artificial spiders created" in the form of a trapping mechanism that grabbed the bumblebee for two seconds.

The 3D flight trajectories of 30 bumblebees were tracked by two high frame-rate cameras.

"The bumblebee flies in a small box, going in one side and there are artificial flowers where the bee can search for food," says PhD student and study author Friedrich Lenz.

"What we look at is the data from the two cameras in there, and how the bee's behaviour changes when artificial spiders were introduced."

Friedrich Lenz says the team hope to look at bumblebees in the wild as well and compare the results.

"We are in a very special set-up, and the problem is it's much harder to do it outside," he says.

The sensory perception, memory, and individuality of the bees may also be factors that could change the outcomes of foraging theories, the research found.

Dr Klages says it's a very important discovery for other mathematical foraging studies.

"In previous foraging theories, the mathematical model was more abstract. We found you do really have to incorporate the interaction."

The research was part of a cross-disciplinary study with other departments at the university.

Samsung Galaxy S II getting ICS upgrade March 15th, says Israeli Facebook page

It may come slightly too late for Caesar, but a post has appeared on Samsung Mobile IL's Facebook page saying that the long-awaited Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update will reach GSII owners on March 15th. We're not fluent in Hebrew, and apparently neither is Google Translate, but it does suggest that the update will land on "tens of thousands of Galaxy SII devices" purchased in that country, either from "cellular companies in the country or directly from [Samsung]." Mazel tov and mabrouk. Let's just hope it signals the start of the global roll-out.

Update: Amir, one of our readers from Tel Aviv has offered us a direct translation of the post:

"We promised that we are working about that. You have waited patiently. And it's coming in March 15th: Android version 4, ICS, for tens of thousands of the Galaxy S2 owners that purchased it from the cellular company in Israel or directly from us. We are very excited in here towards the launch, hope that you too :)"

[Thanks, Amir]

Iran focus as Obama talks to Israel backers

President Barack Obama said Sunday the United States will not hesitate to attack Iran with military force to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, but he cautioned that "too much loose talk of war" recently has only helped Tehran and driven up the price of oil.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, standing his ground against what his country perceives as a threat to its existence, said that he perhaps most appreciated hearing Obama say that "Israel must be able to defend itself, by itself, against any threat."

Speaking to a powerful pro-Israel lobby, Obama appealed to Israel for more time to let sanctions further isolate Iran. He sought to halt a drumbeat to war with Iran and hold off a unilateral Israeli strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.

"For the sake of Israel's security, America's security and the peace and security of the world, now is not the time for bluster," Obama told thousands at the annual American-Israel Public Affairs Committee's policy conference. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in, and to sustain the broad international coalition that we have built."

Quoting Theodore Roosevelt, Obama said he would "speak softly, but carry a big stick" ? and warned Iran not to test U.S. resolve.

Many analysts believe an Israeli attack would result in a region-wide conflict, including Iranian attacks on American troops in the Persian Gulf, and could damage the world economy by causing oil prices to skyrocket. It also remains unclear how much damage a military strike would do to Iran's nuclear program. Many of the country's nuclear facilities are buried deep underground.

Obama's widely anticipated speech came one day before he meets at the White House with Netanyahu, who planned to address AIPAC late Monday. Three GOP presidential candidates ? Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich ? were scheduled to speak to the conference via satellite on Tuesday, a critical day in the campaign when 10 states vote.

To Israel and to Jewish voters in this country, Obama promoted his administration's commitment to the Mideast ally.

"You don't have to count on my words. You can look at my deeds," Obama said. He defended his record of rallying to Israel's security and political sovereignty, saying: "We have been there for Israel. Every single time."

Obama's comments were heavily laced with the politics of the campaign. He blamed distortions of his record on partisan politics.

Netanyahu, in brief comments to reporters before attending a conference of Jewish leaders in Canada, made no reference to the sanctions and diplomatic avenues that Obama wants to give time to work.

The Israeli president, Shimon Peres, spoke before Obama and said that a nuclear Iran would be a menace to the world, not just to Israel's security.

"Iran is an evil, cruel, morally corrupt regime. It is based on destruction and is an affront to human dignity," Peres said. He said Israel knows the horrors of war and does not seek one with Iran, "but if we are forced to fight, trust me. We shall prevail."

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. The U.S., Israel and many allies see no sign of that, and Israeli leaders openly have discussed the possibility of a military strike.

"Let's begin with the truth that you all understand: No Israeli government can tolerate a nuclear weapon in the hands of a regime that denies that Holocaust, threatens to wipe Israel off the map and sponsors terrorist groups committed to Israel's destruction," Obama said.

Obama said he would use all sources of American power, but that only true resolution would come from diplomacy.

U.S. officials worry that an Israeli attack on oil-power Iran could drive up pump prices and entangle the U.S. in a new Mideast confrontation during this year's presidential election season. They want to give diplomacy and economic penalties more time to work.

The United States and Europe have pursued more severe banking and other economic penalties separately. The toughest take effect this summer and target Iran's oil business and powerful central bank.

"I firmly believe that an opportunity remains for diplomacy ? backed by pressure ? to succeed," Obama insisted.

And in his greatest detail to date, Obama spelled out the consequences of a military campaign against Iran.

"I would ask that we all remember the weightiness of these issues," Obama said. "Already, there is too much loose talk of war."

Chevy Volt sales so slow, GM idles production

Chevy Volt sales should be perking up with high gas prices. Instead, General Motors has decided to stop producing the Chevy Volt for five weeks.

Chevy's electric car, the Volt, is running on empty. With sales lagging and inventories building, GM has decided to idle production of the Chevy Volt for five weeks. During that time, about 1,300 workers will temporarily be laid off.

GM executives can not be happy that this move will once again raise questions about the viability and long term prospects for the Volt.

?But in reality, they had no choice.

?Volt sales have been so slow this year, the company needs to adjust production to demand. And so far, Volt demand has fallen well short of original expectations.

?Back when GM launched the Chevy Volt, it boldly targeted sales of 10,000 in 2011 and 60,000 in 2012. Last year, GM sold 7,671 Volts and just 1,626 this year.

?Why have sales been slow?

?Some of it is due to the slow ramp up in sales last year. While the entire country saw ads for the Volt, the car was sold most of the year in select markets. Then the controversy and investigation into?Volt battery fires?left a cloud hanging over the electric car.

But the biggest factor may be the price of the Volt. At $33,500, the Volt is not cheap. Yes, for that price owners can get impressive mileage and pay a fraction what others are paying for gas. Still, with 22 models for sale offering at least 40 MPG, a lot of buyers looking for fuel efficiency are content to buy a hybrid or gas powered car for well under $30,000.

Ironically, this shut down comes as gas prices are soaring. This is exactly the time when an?electric car?should be an easy sell. That's clearly not the case with the Chevy Volt.

UX Expert, 23, Almost Refused Entry To Ireland To Hire People. Name?s Flanagan.

Screen Shot 2012-03-03 at 17.43.21As tech becomes the world's hottest subject and one of its few growth sectors, the international borders are straining as talent moves around the globe in search of the best startups and projects. European countries are increasingly alive to this, and we've seen huge efforts made by tech celebrities to lobby the White House over the Startup Visa concept. But it seems the news that the tech industry is now a big deal had not reached a certain immigration official at Dublin Airport today. An unnamed officer today turned away one of the world's top UX guys from entering Ireland because they didn't believe his "story". The "story" turned out to be told by one Brian Flanagan - a name normally recognised as being Irish in extraction, but more to the point, Flanagan is currently working with one Joi Ito on a project. The problem was that the official simply did not buy the idea that UX is a "real job" and promptly sent him off to a waiting room where he was due to be deported back to the U.S. from where he'd traveled. Despite telling officials he was in Ireland to HIRE people, he was told bluntly: "You couldn't be hiring people, you're - like - 23!"
