'The Lorax' review: Animated adaptation robs Dr. Seuss eco-tale of ...

This week's new kid cartoon is called "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," and I guess that's a good thing. Without the author's name in the title, you might wonder where it came from.

It's not that it's a dreadful cartoon. It just feels like every other middling cartoon. (If you really want to appreciate how good Pixar and DreamWorks can be, sit through some animated movies they didn't make.)

Of course, the source material isn't that great to begin with. "The Lorax" came out the year after the first Earth Day, during Dr. Seuss' preachiest period; whimsical charm definitely took a back seat to pointed lessons about recycling and reforestation.

If we absolutely have to have a message, I'd prefer the one-tiny-size-fits-all lesson of "Horton Hears a Who," but as a rule, outside of the lunatic fringe, I think we can all agree that trees are a good thing, and pollution is a bad one.

There's not that much more to the original book than that message, and there's even less here.

At least the real Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" had, well, Dr. Seuss, and his wonderful art. But this "Lorax" eschews his unique style in favor of less risky, more generic characters. It looks like something you've seen before.

In fact, you have -- if you saw "Despicable Me." "The Lorax" is from the same team and it has the same rubbery, pre-made look and hungry-for-merchandising feel. "Despicable Me" had a chorus of cute "minions"; this one has a trio of adorable fish.

There's also some lazy stereotyping with the vocal cast -- or is it just a coincidence that the hero's pushy mother has a clich?d New York Jewish accent, that the villain sounds a bit like a Jersey tough guy, or that one character's stupid relatives all hail from the Deep South?

True, Dr. Seuss' original story -- in a world without trees, one boy searches for the last remaining seed -- remains. As does the Lorax, a trippy kind of nature spirit -- who, thankfully, is voiced by Danny DeVito, which at least anchors things in real comedy.

He's fun, as is Betty White, who gives voice to the hero's grandma. But Zac Efron and Taylor Swift add nothing but names for the poster as the young hero and his secret crush. And a newly added villain -- a tiny capitalist with a Moe Howard haircut -- is simply a bore.

It all ends -- as most cartoons seem to, these days -- with a big chase. That's well done, at least, as is the Lorax (the character that's truest to Seuss) and some of the backgrounds. A few forgettable songs are dropped in along the way, and there's not too much narrative self-righteousness.

Although that might have been preferable to the hypocrisy of the cartoon itself -- whose marketing includes cross-promotions with a brand of disposable diapers and a new SUV. Because, really, what's truer to Dr. Seuss' message than landfills and smog?

Note: Newhouse News Service movie critic Stephen Whitty wrote this review.

__________

DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX
2 stars, out of 5

Snapshot: An animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss story about a world without trees and the boy who tries to bring them back.

What works: The title character, a mystical ecologist, is fun (and well-voiced by Danny DeVito).

What doesn't: Seuss' usual whimsy has been painted over by a lot of standard CGI animation and tired plotting.

Voices: DeVito, Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Ed Helms, Betty White, Rob Riggle. Directors: Chris Renaud, Kyle Balda. Rating: PG, for brief mild language. Running time: 1 hour 26 minutes. Where: See New Orleans showtimes.

Ma?a Vidal, singer-songwriter | don'tcallmeiconplease

She was born in upstate New York to a French father and American mother, she went to study in Montreal and she is living now in Barcelona. Singer-songwriter Ma?a Vidal has one of the most beautiful female voices actually and recently she has released her album God Is My Bike, full of sensitive songs like The Alphabet Of My Phobias. So her perfect pop-folk is the best reason to discover Ma?a?s work through our DONTCALLMEICON Q&A.

What are you working on actually? I?m sitting up in a hotel room, working on a song about a recurring flying dream I?ve been for the last couple years.
Which kind of clothes and accesories are you wearing right now? Leggings, always black leggings, and my mum?s brown leather dancing shoes that I nicked from her while I was in NYC, and a big baggy cardigan and a million cheap rings and watches that I picked up at antique stores.
Which is your favourite song actually? This second? Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin.
And the book that you are reading now? F. Scott Fitzgerald The Beautiful and the Damned.
Which was the last film you see at cinema? The Artist, but the other night we set up a projection of Disney?s Fantasia at a friend?s house and that was a much more powerful experience somehow.
Do you like any tv series? Mad Men? but my guilty pleasure is the show Bones.
What would you like to invent? A garbage and carbon monoxide powered car that consumes green houses gases and poops out puppies and polar ice caps, simultaneous cleaning up the environment and creating a nicer happier world.
What?s the last weirdest thing you?ve seen? A garbage and carbon monoxide powered car zooming down the highway pooping out puppies.
Do you like animals? What kind? Have you a pet? I have 2 dogs but they?re in the States! My whole life I?ve had all kinds of pets; birds, fish, gerbils, cats, once even a pet rat that used to crawl around inside in my clothes. I love wolves and cats and owls and foxes and sugar gliders.

What?s under your bed? A bright blue vintage suitcase filled with all my strange and weird treasures.
How do you help defending environment? I don?t drive and I don?t ask for plastic bags at the grocery store, and I conserve water but showering very infrequently. I used to be a crusader for the environment but oddly my career choice makes it more difficult; I have to fly in planes a lot, for example, and that makes me sad.
What do you think about politics? And banks? I?m not very up to speed on European politics and neither on American politics, come to think of it. I kind of live in a bubble. I did go down to Plaza Catalunya to protest at the end of May though. I think the world is in a lot of trouble and I can?t see the politicians being the ones getting us out of it, the system is too broken for that. And I would have loved to be in New York during the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Which is your most creative moment the day? My most creative moment actually depends on the weather? I can?t get anything done when it?s bright and sunny. But generally whenever the sun isn?t high in the sky, like in the late afternoon.
Who is your favourite celebrity? Is there anyone that you detest? Charlotte Gainsbourg. She?s my favorite. I think she?s brilliant. But there?s no room for hate in my life so no, no celebrities that I detest.
Which is your next professional challenge? Trying to find a time to write and record a new album while constantly being on tour and playing shows. It?s a fun challenge because I really do like performing but also finding a gray late afternoon to myself where I can be creative is difficult when I?m always moving. I?m learning? to stay up late in hotel rooms and play around on garageband though!
Is there any urgent dream to come true? No! That?s this really weird development of 2012 is that if I have to make a wish, I?m totally at a loss. This has never happened to me before, so either it means that my life is perfect or that the world is ending or both. But really, I couldn?t think of a single thing to wish on New Years Eve!
Anything to regret? Not one thing. I feel like having regrets is sadder than actually regretting something so I avoid it. I don?t know if that makes sense, but i mean that the idea of regretting something is so fundamentally unchangeably sad that I chose to never look back.
What or who is an icon for you? Amy Winehouse, totally an icon both stylistically and musically. She?s beautiful, tragically flawed, fiercely talented, and dead. Does it get any better than that?

Don't Compromise Your Real Estate Strategy for the Sake of Buying ...

ForeclosureForSale wide Don?t Compromise Your Real Estate Strategy for the Sake of Buying: BiggerPockets Investors CornerquestionsRealtor.com is working with BiggerPockets.com, to bring beginning real estate investors helpful advice and tips for getting started in real estate. Join us here each Wednesday morning for wisdom directly from the BiggerPockets team:

Many investors in recent months have noticed a decline in?REO and HUD inventory in their markets. While some may speculate that we are finally working through the majority of the foreclosure casualties from the real estate crash, many analysts believe the lack of foreclosures on the market has more to do with government intervention. Whatever the case, an investor who has been consistently buying distressed properties may suddenly find themselves looking harder for properties and finding less.

With fewer distressed properties hitting the open market, competition for these properties has begun to heat up. ?In my market, I?ve seen prices of properties in the under 100K range creeping upwards as a result of this dynamic. Interestingly, an overall market may still experience declines in real estate values, but the lower price point properties may actually be on the increase. ?Since most investment properties fall into the lower price ranges, it?s not uncommon for investors to see prices of potential investment properties increasing ?even while the overall market is decreasing or holding steady.

Understanding what prices are doing is key for any investor. ?It can be very tempting to set goals based on previous years and create a buying pace that may be difficult to maintain should your market change. I?ve seen investors who were so determined to buy as many houses as they did last year, that they end up compromising and buying houses for more than they should have. As an investor myself, I understand the expectation you can set on yourself to outpace previous years and always grow in volume from one year to the next. However, if the market changes from one year to the next, it?s important that you understand the changes and make necessary adjustments to your strategy and expectations.

The last thing an investor wants to do is buy investment property for the sake of buying property . . . rather than truly waiting for the properties that make financial sense. ?If you find that good investment properties in your market are harder to come by, perhaps that should be an indicator that this period of time may be associated with less (and smarter) investing.

?I remember hearing all these stories growing up about my Pappy,? Canadiens Blake Geoffrion recalls. ?I knew he was a superstar but I didn?t know what it meant until I got here, people coming up to us, offering condolences on our loss, telling us he was a great man. I couldn?t believe these people recognized his grandsons.

MONTREAL ? Blake Geoffrion has come north from his native Tennessee with some sound advice from his father.

?He told me not to worry about you guys,? Geoffrion said with a laugh Wednesday in the Canadiens? Bell Centre dressing room, waving at a media crowd unlike any he?d seen before.

On Thursday, Geoffrion will make his home-ice Habs debut, following in the strides of his great-grandfather, Howie Morenz; his grandfather, Bernie Geoffrion; and his father, Danny. He will skate beneath Howie and Bernie?s banners that hang from the rafters, and against the Minnesota Wild he?ll absorb as much of the experience as his focus will allow.

There was no sign Wednesday that the pressure was bearing down on a fourth-generation Canadien. And he was taking to heart a few words of wisdom from defenceman P.K. Subban, 22, an old sage who suggested the 24-year-old newcomer simply use the emotion he?ll feel on the ice to his advantage.

?When (Danny) played here, he said he felt the pressure,? Geoffrion said. ?He was nervous. It?s a lot different for me. I was kind of disguised way down in Tennessee. You guys didn?t even know I existed for awhile.

?My father grew up here, he got to see Pappy all the time,? he added of his grandfather, the legendary Boomer. ?When Dad was playing here, my Pappy was the coach.?

It?s been a whirlwind two weeks for Geoffrion, acquired from the Nashville Predators on Feb. 17 for Habs defenceman Hal Gill. He reported to the Hamilton Bulldogs, played for them at the Bell Centre last Friday, was called up to the Canadiens on Monday, made his Habs debut Tuesday in Tampa Bay and on Thursday sees action on home ice, his parents in the crowd.

Grandmother Marlene Geoffrion, Boomer?s widow ? ?my Nana,? Blake calls her ? won?t be in the house, not a frequent flyer. But she, too, is part of this magic.

On Wednesday, walking to the Bell Centre from the hotel where he?s installed, Geoffrion pulled on his No. 57 jersey ? honouring Boomer?s No. 5 and Morenz?s No. 7 ? and joined his new team on risers at centre ice for the club?s official portrait, something ?pretty special.

?It?s an honour to wear the Geoffrion name on the back and to be a part of this family and the tradition here in Montreal,? Geoffrion said. ?Pressure comes along with that but I?m my own player. I?ll just play as hard as I can.?

The young man is embracing all that goes with his family?s legendary name. It was something for which he got a taste in 2006 when he was in town for the emotional ceremony to retire the sweater of Boomer, who?d died the morning of the banner-raising.

?I remember hearing all these stories growing up about my Pappy,? he recalled. ?I knew he was a superstar but I didn?t know what it meant until I got here, people coming up to us, offering condolences on our loss, telling us he was a great man. I couldn?t believe these people recognized his grandsons.

?It was pretty emotional. I was really close to Pappy, we talked all the time on the phone. He was one heck of a character. He captured a room, you knew his presence. He loved to be the centre of attention and tell some jokes, so when I look up at the banners, those memories come to me of just how much I miss that guy.?

Geoffrion confessed he didn?t know Howie Morenz ?on a personal level,? likely because the Habs? first true superstar died in 1937.

?But I heard a lot of stories about him ? the Stratford Streak, the Mitchell Meteor,? he said. ?I know the story about him dying of a broken heart (medically, of a coronary embolism), and obviously he was really loved in Montreal, too.?

The Bell Centre ovation Geoffrion will hear Thursday won?t be for Morenz or the Boomer, but for the new Canadien who some are calling Baby Boom.

Even Geoffrion?s given name is famous in this city, the surname of legendary coach Hector (Toe) Blake.

?I?ve asked my mom if my name has to do with Toe,? he said. ?But she said she chose the name because she liked it. It?s just a coincidence.?

He paused.

?I think.?

There will be butterflies come game time, Geoffrion admitted, even if last Friday he felt Bell ice beneath his blades and saw the banners overhead that gave him chills down his spine.

?I needed that experience,? he said. ?I didn?t play too well for the Bulldogs, but those jitters are gone.?

Geoffrion?s dream comes true just after 7:30 p.m., nearly six years after he?d hoped that the Canadiens would bring him into the NHL.

He?d interviewed several times with New Jersey but the Devils passed him by in the 2006 draft; the Habs instead chose Ben Maxwell and Mathieu Carle with their second-round picks, 49th and 53rd overall.

Geoffrion went to his hometown Nashville Predators, 56th overall, and now suits up for what he calls the team that?s ?my home away from home.?

His father, he said, ?is pumped,? even if Danny needed some convincing. Blake has long teased his father with Internet rumours and when he was dealt to the Canadiens, his call was shrugged off.

?Dad told me, ?Yeah, real funny. I?m at the movies with Nana, I?ll call you back,? and he hung up,? Geoffrion recalled.

?I later swore to him on my life that it was true, and he turned to Nana and just said, ?Taber ?? ? the rest of the word garbled in his laughter.

But now here he is, like three generations before him wearing the CH.

?I?ll tell you what, God works in mysterious ways,? Geoffrion said. ?It?s been one heck of a ride.?

HTC One car dock and app the best vehicle experience yet

HTC One Series Car Dock app

We snagged a few minutes with the all-new car dock app on the HTC One series phones. Let's not beat around the bush here -- it's easily the best car app we've seen on an Android smartphone, bar none.

HTC Car Dock DongleYou start off with our favorte feature -- a plugless dock. There are four connecting pins on the back of the phone that hook things up to the dock without having to fumble with a plug. If you've never used a dock like that before, it takes all of the guesswork out of it -- and that's a must while driving.

Once you're connected, the car app automatically launches. Within the app, you've got a cube motif -- not unlike what you might see in an Android launcher, actually. With it, you can easily swipe between navigation, your contacts list and phone, the music app, Tune-in Radio (which is included) -- and, as HTC told us, other third-part apps shoud work with it out of the box as well. But HTC's own apps are so well-done that you might hesitate to use something else. The buttons are large and extremely easy to see and press -- just about the best we've seen. The UI is bright and clear of distraction. Audio will stream to your car stereo via Bluetooth. Don't have Bluetooth? No worries. A dongle that plugs into your aux port will take care of that.

Check out the video of it in action after the break. As of now, our only real question is this: When can we get it?
