Thousands of demonstrators, some wearing gas masks, marched on Japan's parliament Sunday where they will form a human chain to protest the use of nuclear power after the Fukushima crisis.

AFP journalists estimated there were at least 10,000 demonstrators in the early stages of the march. They will form a human chain around the parliament in the evening.

"After the Fukushima disaster, I thought that the government and vested interests were telling us lies about nuclear power being safe," said Miho Igarashi, 46, an architect from Ibaraki prefecture south of Fukushima.

"We have to raise our voices against" the danger of atomic power, she told AFP.

The rally is the latest in a string of protests in Japan, which has seen a rising tide of anti-nuclear sentiment since Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda in June ordered the restart of two reactors.

Noda defended the move citing looming power shortages after Japan switched off its 50 nuclear reactors -- which provided the resource-poor country with a third of its energy -- in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

Weekly demonstrations outside the prime minister's residence have drawn tens of thousands of people and a rally in west Tokyo earlier this month saw a crowd that organisers claimed was about 170,000-strong.

Sunday's protest took place in high temperatures under a blazing sun, and the crowd included families with small children.

"I decided to join the protest because nuclear reactors are resuming even though their safety is not guaranteed," said Sayaka Suzuki, 28, who was with her three-year-old daughter.

The latest rally comes less than a week after a damning government-backed report on last year's crisis said Japanese officials and Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), operator of the crippled Fukushima plant, ignored the risk of an atomic accident because they believed in the "myth of nuclear safety".

A separate parliamentary report said the worst nuclear accident in a generation was a man-made disaster, marked by a lack of oversight and collusion between TEPCO, the government and regulators.

The giant utility largely cleared itself of blame, saying the size of last year's earthquake and tsunami was beyond all expectations and could not have reasonably been foreseen.

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, crippled cooling equipment at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, triggering meltdowns that spewed radioactivity and forced tens of thousands of residents to flee.

The rising anti-nuclear sentiment in Japan has also led to the launch of Greens Japan, a political organisation aiming to field candidates with an environmental agenda in parliamentary elections.

"A party that strongly pursues environmental policies is needed," Akira Miyabe, the group's 59-year-old deputy head, was quoted by Kyodo News as saying at an inaugural meeting on Saturday.

Searchers on Saturday found the bodies of two U.S. mountaineers who apparently plunged 1,000 feet to their deaths on their way down from the summit of a glacier-capped Peruvian peak.

Gil Weiss, 29, and Ben Horne, 32, fell off a ridge after reaching the west summit of 20,584-foot?Palcaraju in the Cordillera Blanca range in mid-July, search coordinator Ted Alexander told The Associated Press.

Their bodies will be recovered Sunday, he said.

Both Weiss, of Queens, N.Y., and Horne, of Annandale, Va., were experienced climbers. Weiss was a repeat visitor to the Cordillera Blanca while this trip was Horne's first.

Both belong to the pullharder.org climbers' collective, and Horne wrote about the first, six-day leg of their trip on its blog, saying they had been buffeted by hurricane-force winds when the two reached the top of the 20,216-foot Ranrapalca.

After a rest in Huaraz, the two set out again July 11 for an excursion of seven to 10 days. Their families contacted Alexander after 13 days passed with no word from them.

Weiss's sister, Galit, said the two were not carrying a satellite phone.

Charmed by his front of the house staff, I made my way to my table and spread my newspaper while sipping on good House wine (really nice and refreshing Verduzzo!) and perusing the menu which is surprisingly wide and a mixture of dishes from various regional areas. The starters range from vegetable bruschetta to figs wrapped in Parma ham to mussels cooked with a hint of orange (and they do smell like that, I assure you, since the people next to me ordered them!) and also comprise traditional fare of ravioli and less conventional combinations, like finocchi (fennel bulbs) au gratin, but Italian style.

First courses of pasta are especially inviting? I was drawn as a good veggie toward the gnocchi with asparagus and courgettes which populate a very veggie friendly list (also containing cannelloni and radicchio and mushroom sformato), but then went for an off carte?will tell you later. Non veggies, you are going to be pampered! Paccheri al branzino (a type of white fish), risotto with squid ink and salmon tagliatelle with rucola, as well as the ever perfect pescatora pasta will delight fish lovers, whereas those more attracted to meat will be happy tasting the lasagna.
The main courses are especially interesting and bear witness to Graziano?s love for Italian regional cookery: again, fish is a real main stay of his offering, and I suppose that it is not a surprise since he?s from a great harbour city, Bari. Coming to me? after much mulling, I must confess I went for simple things, vegetable bruschette, two topped with tomatoes and garlic and one each topped with roasted aubergine and cannellini beans were my starter which I truly enjoyed and then here it comes, proof that this is THE place for fine, yet fresh and unpretentious and really authentic Italian cookery? a really amazing plate of penne arrabbiata, a perfect balance of chilli, garlic and a light sautee of onion and tomato. I really cherished this plate of pasta, and I know it may seem simple, too simple, but hey?I think it really shows the wholesome nature of Al Dente. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce finely balanced.
I was stuffed by the end of this but incredibly happy and ready to close the evening with a small glass of limoncello, a real treat!

What else to add? I am a Roman lass and please do take my word for it?Al Dente is the real thing, freshly made, on the spot and genuine Italian cooking served in cosy and lovely surroundings. Graziano was very hospitable and came for a chat: he said that the premises had always been a restaurant and it was only fitting that Easter Road should retain them as such, in my mind. He sources his produce carefully in Granton and Musselburgh and has his suppliers for all these delicacies that we Italians cannot live without too .

I left Al Dente reluctantly, as the last orders were coming out? with a heart filled with sunshine as well as with a fine meal. I really hope that you Edinburgh dwellers out there will give Al Dente a try?as I said, a corner of Italy on Easter Road? what else can you ask for?

Writing helps students make sense of what they have learned and connect ideas to their own lives.

If they develop their reading habits, they gain positive thoughts and feelings at the same time, and are more likely to enjoy and love it when they become adults.

Sometimes, psychosocial and emotional problems arise when children are having difficulty in expressing themselves and in understanding others as well. This may be a sign of delay in language, which may be caused by poor listening and reading skills.

Securing literacy grants for schools by an organization committed to child development and education will hopefully put an end to illiteracy and help the nation move forward into the future.

PHOENIX, Ariz. --?A deputy from a controversial Arizona sheriff's office countered accusations of racial profiling on Thursday, telling a court that he had risked his life to rescue a Latino illegal immigrant from armed kidnappers.

Carlos Rangel told a civil trial alleging Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his office engage in racially profiling Latinos that, at the behest of federal immigration police, he went undercover to play the role of the immigrant's relative to meet kidnappers, one of whom pointed a gun at him.

The kidnappers were arrested and the immigrant was released.

Asked by defense lawyer Tom Liddy if he was an "anti-Hispanic bigot," Rangel answered: "No. I am not."

The Justice Department suit accuses Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio of systematically violating the civil rights of Latinos. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Arpaio, who styles himself "America's toughest sheriff," and his office are defendants in a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix that will test whether police can target illegal immigrants without racially profiling Hispanic citizens and legal residents.

The 80-year-old lawman testified this week he was against racial profiling and denied his office arrested people because of the color of their skin.

The case will serve as a precursor to a civil rights lawsuit filed by the federal government, which is much broader.

Feds sue Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio, alleging racial profiling

The plaintiffs, a group of Latinos, say they were discriminated against during sweeps to flush out criminals and illegal immigrants in Maricopa County, which includes the metropolitan Phoenix area. During such sweeps, sheriff's deputies flood an area of a city ? in some cases, heavily Latino areas ? over several days to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders.

'Dark-skinned people'
The group accused Arpaio of launching some sweeps based on emails and letters from residents who complained that "dark-skinned people" were congregating in a given area or speaking Spanish. The group says deputies in the sweeps pulled over Hispanics without probable cause, making the stops only to inquire about the immigration status of the people in the vehicles.

The sheriff has said that people are stopped only if authorities have probable cause to believe they have committed crimes and that deputies later find many are illegal immigrants.

Arpaio's office maintained that illegal immigrants accounted for 57 percent of the 1,500 people arrested in the 20 sweeps conducted since January 2008, according to figures provided by the sheriff's department, which hasn't conducted any such patrols since October.

The sheriff, who is seeking re-election to a sixth term in November, has been a lightning rod for controversy over his aggressive enforcement of immigration laws in the state, as well as his investigation into the validity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Arizona was in the news last month when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key element of the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants requiring police to investigate those they stop and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Arpaio faces a separate, broader lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department in May, alleging systematic profiling, sloppy and indifferent police work and a disregard for minority rights.

The civil lawsuit was lodged in the name of Manuel Ortega Melendres, one of five Hispanics who say they were stopped by deputies because they were Latino, which Arpaio denies. It was later opened to all Latino drivers stopped since 2007.

Melendres, a Mexican tourist on a valid visa in a truck was pulled over ostensibly because the white driver was speeding.

Rangel, who arrested Melendres, was asked by plaintiffs' counsel if he had questioned the driver. He told the court he had no grounds to investigate the driver.

When asked by Liddy if he had ever racially profiled anyone while working at the sheriff's office, Rangel, a 13-year veteran of the force, replied: "No".

In later testimony, a Hispanic woman who is a U.S. citizen told the court she was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy in 2009 on suspicion she had drugs, alcohol and weapons in her car as she drove home from studying at a Phoenix valley university.

Despite telling the deputy she was pregnant, Lorena Escamilla said, she was thrown roughly onto the back seat of his patrol car. A subsequent search of her car did not find any drugs. While she was cited for failure to produce identification and not having insurance, charges against her were dropped.

Escamilla said she later filed a charge of assault with Phoenix police department against the deputy and has since been fearful of being pulled over by the officer.

Also testifying was a Hispanic mother who was in a vehicle with a group of Boy Scouts that was pulled over in 2009 by a deputy for speeding while returning from the Grand Canyon.

Diona Solis, who is also a U.S. citizen, said the deputy was "rude" and "mocking" and unnecessarily requested identification from the boys in the car aged 8 to 11, among them her son.

"The boys were minors ... I thought it was unreasonable to ask them for IDs ... they hadn't done anything wrong," she said.

Driver of Breast Cancer Stem Cell Metastasis Found | Cancer Kick

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that a cancer gene linked to aggressive spread of the disease promotes breast cancer stem cells. The finding implies a new way to target the behavior of these lethal cells.

The finding involves the cancer gene RhoC, which has previously been shown to promote metastasis of many types of cancer. RhoC levels increase as breast cancer progresses and high levels of RhoC are associated with worse patient survival.

Cancer stem cells are the small number of cells within a tumor that are believed to fuel the tumor?s growth and spread. Researchers believe traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments often become ineffective because they do not kill the cancer stem cells, and that the key to future treatments is to develop drugs that target and kill these cells.

This new study, which appears online in PLoS ONE, suggests a new way to get at the cancer stem cells.

?Targeting the specific molecular cogs driving the cancer stem cell machinery responsible for the cancer spreading has potential for future treatments. Eliminating cancer stem cells may ultimately be necessary to cure certain cancers, but in the meantime, we may be able to manage the cancer stem cell population and the invasive behaviors of these cells by disrupting the molecular machinery, using RhoC as a target,? says senior study author Sofia D. Merajver, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at the University of Michigan and scientific director of the breast oncology program at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The researchers looked at breast cancer cell lines that were highly metastatic and cell lines from normal breast tissue. By inhibiting or overexpressing RhoC, they found that RhoC expression is necessary to cause metastasis in both cell lines, and that RhoC overexpression alone can cause metastasis. The researchers also tested this in mice and had similar results.

Merajver?s lab, in conjunction with other U-M researchers, is studying a novel small molecule drug to inhibit RhoC, which has shown promising initial results in the laboratory. The researchers are continuing to develop this inhibitor, which will require several years of additional testing in the laboratory before potentially advancing to clinical trials.

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Last week's terror attack in Bulgaria, which killed five Israelis and injured 36, convinced the Israeli government to launch a counter-offensive against Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based terror group funded, armed and trained by Iran.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday morning, saying Israel has concrete information that Hezbollah was behind last Wednesday's bombing in Burgas, Bulgaria.

"I know, based on absolutely rock solid intelligence, that this is Hezbollah and this is something that Iran knows very, very well," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu also said he thinks Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime will fall and he's most concerned about what will happen to Syria's chemical weapons stockpile, as well as its rocket and missile cache, if there's no government in Damascus.
